Chapter 34
Joe
I sat back against the cliff face, my swollen ankle covered in snow was still painful to move.
“Still there Joe?” Townsend called to me.
“Not like I can go far,” I called back, it was getting dark quickly, I hoped Zach and Matt had made it back okay.
“This weather’s getting bad,” Ed commented.
“The radio said there was a storm coming in from the east, I didn’t realise it was so soon,” I closed my eyes as I focused on my breathing, my chest was badly bruised. I felt cold drops landing on my skin, the first snow of the storm was beginning to fall and I knew it would quickly get bad.
“Damn it,” I muttered, lifting the hood on my coat for a little extra protection.
“Will the lodge be safe?” Ed called to me,
“Yeah,” I called back, “It’s practically hurricane proof,”
“The girls will be safe then,” He checked,
“Yeah,”
Why had I missed the cliff, I know it had been covered in snow but I still shouldn’t have missed it.
“This will be a christmas to remember,” A girls voice called, “Joe Solomon falling off a cliff face,”
“Don’t rub salt in the wound!” I shouted back.
“Sorry Joe,” Cam laughed, “Too good to resist,”
“You going down?” Matt asked someone,
“She’ll be the lightest to pull back up,” Edward agreed.
“Be careful,” Zach told her.
“What is it with everyone and being careful?” Cam complained, “You make it sound like I’m normally not careful!”
I looked up, blinking the snow out of my eyes, and saw Cammie abseiling down towards me.
“How you doing?” She asked once she reached me.
“Oh you know,” I shrugged and winced, “Just thought I’d come down here to enjoy the view,”
“Yeah well,” She passed me a harness, “I can think of better times,”
“Okay I get it,” I rolled my eyes as she helped me pull on the harness, “You get used to it you know,”
“To what?” Cam looked up from tying the rope to the harness,
“They keep telling you to be careful because they care, worry.” I held her gaze for a moment.
“A lot of people worry about me,” Cam smiled a little.
“We do,” I admitted, we were being quiet enough for the others not to hear us.
“You two okay?” Matt called.
“Fine!” I yelled back.
“Was Joe Solomon just admitting that he cares about someone?” Cam teased.
“Don’t tell anyone,” I laughed, “I’ve got a reputation to uphold,”
“I won’t,” Cam looked down, pausing for a moment, “Whilst I’m glad my dad’s back, I’m glad you’re still with mom,”
