Chapter 72
Zach
I was heading out for a jog the next morning when I heard a shout from Matt behind me.
“Hey,” I waited for him to fall in to step next to me.
“How’s Cammie?” He asked quietly.
“Getting better,” I nodded to him as we walked towards the woods, “Upset about the babies,”
“It’s better this way,” Matt muttered, making me stop in my tracks.
“She has lost two children!” I snapped at him, “Don’t you have any idea what she’s feeling like?”
“You’re both kids!” Matt shouted at me, as we turned to face each other.
“We still would have loved them,” I shook my head, “It would have made no difference.”
“You got her pregnant Zach, what were you thinking?!” Matt yelled, I shook my head and turned away from him. Of course, it was all about me getting her pregnant.
“For the millionth time!” I shouted, “It was an accident!”
“You shouldn’t have been in the same bed as her in the first place!” Matt snapped at me, “You should have married her first! Done what’s right by her.”
“It was Cammie’s choice.” I growled at him, “She wanted to wait to get married.”
“Well you shouldn’t have slept with her then, you’re worse than your father … sleeping with every girl he gets the chance to be with!”
My anger boiled over then, I turned to face him with my arm ready to punch his face but he beat me to it, as I turned his fist met my eye and sent me stumbling backwards.
I regained my balance and glared at him, “At least I never left them.” I spat at him. He froze and looked at me for a moment before turning and running off.
I reached up and wiped the blood off my face, my nose didn’t feel broken but it was bleeding badly. I headed inside and up to a bathroom. I wiped away the black blood that had dried around my nose and placed a cold facecloth over my bruised eye. I thought about Cammie and decided I should go to see her, make sure her dad wasn’t giving her hassle. Maybe I should go an see a nurse first, just to check my nose wasn’t broken.
As I passed Cammie’s room I hesitated a little, she was sat laughing with her friends. For some reason Bex turned and looked at me, I quickly hid my face and headed along the corridor. I quickened my pace as I heard the door open and close before Bex called my name, “Zach!” I didn’t respond, “Zach wait!” she grabbed my shoulder, forcing me to turn to face her.
“Oh my god!” She gasped, “What happened?”
“Matt wanted to talk.” I sighed, “We ended up arguing and he punched me,”
“Hard by the looks of it,” She commented, “Have you told Rachel?”
“Told Rachel what?” Joe was coming up behind Bex so saw my face before I could hide it.
“Matt punched him,” Bex explained.
“Why?” Joe frowned.
“He was saying I shouldn’t have got Cam pregnant and was bad mouthing my family,” I moved to a chair against the wall and sat down, “I turned on him but he hit me first.”
“He’s out of line,” Joe nodded, “I’ll sort it, you go and get that seen to.”
Joe
I went back along the corridor to Cam’s room and let myself in.
“Hey Joe,” Cam smiled, somewhat more cheerful than she had been yesterday.
“Could I have a private word Cam?” I looked to Macey and Liz.
“Sure,” Macey got up, “We’ll go and get some lunch.”
“What’s up?” Cam frowned as I sat on the bed.
“Your dad hit Zach,” I told her straight,
“Because of what happened?” She guessed sadly,
“More for it happening in the first place rather than for loosing them,” I nodded, “Can I suggest something?”
She nodded with a sigh.
“Remind him that you’re a grown up, he still sees you as that sixth grader that he saw before he left us all. I don’t think he realises that we all moved on when he left.” I told her.
“He doesn’t realise I can look after myself,” Cammie nodded, “Will you stay while I talk to him?”
“If you want me to,” I shrugged, “Shall I get him?”
“Please,” She nodded.
It didn’t take me long to find Matt, he was in the stables working against the punchbag.
“Cam wants to talk to you,” I told him, “About punching Zach.”
Matt swore under his breath but followed me as I started back towards the infirmary.
Cammie
I pulled myself upright as my dad followed Joe in to the private room.
“What happened?” I asked as he stood at the end of the bed, Joe moved to my side.
“He told me you were still upset and I pointed out that it was better this way.” He explained bluntly.
“How?” I breathed in disgust, “I have lost your grandchildren, don’t you get that?”
“You’re too young to be having kids Cammie, you’re not even twenty yet!” HE exclaimed.
“There are girls much younger than me having kids!” I yelled back, “You just can’t bear the thought that I’m old enough for that now can you?”
That shut him up, he looked down instead of answering so I continued, “We all moved on dad. Just because you weren’t here doesn’t mean we all put our lives on hold! I grew up, got a boyfriend. It’s not my fault you weren’t there for that bit, you chose that not me.”
“What if you end up not marrying him?” Dad’s head snapped up, “You gave yourself away to him! What will any other man think of you?”
“I don’t want any other man!” I half screamed at him, “I want Zach! I love him!”
“You’re kids!” Dad rolled his eyes, “You don’t know what love is!”
“No!” I lunged at him, “You don’t know what love is!”
I leant forward and winced as I felt a stabbing in my stomach, “Ahh.”
“Cam?” Joe stepped over to me and touched my shoulder.
“Cam?” Dad whispered.
“It hurts,” I sobbed as I clutched at my stomach as pain shot through me.
“Get out of here now!” Joe spat as he gently pushed me back.
“Relax Cam,” He told me as I closed my eyes for a moment.
“It hurts Joe,” I sobbed, “Please, help me?”
“I’m going to Cam,” He told me and pulled the sheets back, I didn’t miss the look on his face, “Just let me get a doctor,”
“And Zach.” I begged him.
“You’ll be fine Cam,” He told me as I closed my eyes for a last time, unable to open them again after that.
