Zach

I looked down to Cammie exactly two hours later, she was half asleep against me, her face sweet and innocent. I didn’t want to disturb her, but a deal was a deal.

“Cammie?” I murmured, “Cam, it’s been two hours.”

“What?” She mumbled and shifted, stretching out her legs in front of us, she went to stretch her sore arm but I stopped her.

“You don’t want to do that,” I warned her, as she opened her eyes and looked around, the parts of the puzzle slotting together as she remembered what had happened.

“Thanks,” She looked up to me, “How are we going to get out?”

I looked to the trap door and thought for a moment, it was too heavy for me on my own, something must’ve fallen on top of it.

“It’s a safe house.” I whispered.

“Yeah.” Cam looked of me in a sort of ‘duh’ way, as if I was stating the obvious- which I kind of was.

“Safe houses have tunnels,” I looked to her, “Especially those in the middle of nowhere.”

Cam’s face lit up and she scanned the room, even though every nook and cranny was already embedded in her brain.

“Under the steps.” We both smiled at the same time.

“Where will it come out though?” Cam asked.

“Not a clue.” I shrugged and looked down to her bear feet, “Did you put any other shoes in that bag?”

“Some flats.” She nodded and got up to retrieve them.

I pushed myself up and picked up the torch to find the entrance to the tunnel we hoped there was. I smiled and pressed down on the odd coloured brick, stepping back as it revealed a low ceilinged tunnel for us to follow.

“It’s a long low tunnel.” I told Cam as I went to pick up the bags.

“Nothing that I haven’t already been through.” She shrugged with a smile and I assumed she meant all the tunnels she had been through at Gallagher. She took the lead with the torch and we started along the corridor.

The only noise was the tapping of our footsteps and the rustle of our clothes as we walked. After a few hundred meters the tunnel widened and heightened, so we could now walk side by side.

“How old were you?” Cam blurted out as she took my hand, which we probably shouldn’t have done seeing as we didn’t know what may be down here and if we would need to run, but I wasn’t going to complain.

“When?” I asked, only able to assume she was talking about one thing.

“Your Aunt.” She glanced to me and rushed to add, “You don’t have to say anything, I understand.”

I was quiet for a minute as we walked, How old had I been? I wondered silently, That first time Joe saved me. I stopped dead, pulling Cam to a halt next to me.

“Zach?” She glanced between me and the path ahead.

“I was ten,” I swallowed and looked at the tunnel around us, so new yet so familiar all at once. Almost too familiar.

“Joe found me there, took me down a tunnel like this.” I looked to her, “Took me to Blackthorne.”

“Could this…” Cam trailed off and looked down the tunnel.
