Chapter 2

Quiet footsteps were coming from the hallway, the footsteps of a spy,... or a bad guy, it could be either or both really. I listened carefully, it wasn’t Zach. I knew that much because Zach and I had a deal, if we were up in the night there was a floorboard that creaked in the middle of the hallway, if it had have been Zach I would have heard the creak.

But I didn’t.

I slipped out of bed and inched towards the door, listening to the person outside my room. They had stopped in the middle of the lounge and I heard them step towards my door. Taking up a position behind the door I watched the handle as it turned and the person pushed the door open. She stepped inside and paused long enough for me to pull my fist back. She then spun around and grabbed my arm as I swung forward and I gasped.

“Aunt Abby!?”

“Hey Cam.” She smiled.

“What are you doing here?” I frowned, “Why aren’t you at home with…” Then I sighed, “You had an argument didn’t you?”

“No.” She sighed, “Not exactly.” We both sat on my bed, next to each other.

“Then what?” I asked.

“I don’t know exactly but he wants to get a ‘desk job’ or something.” Abby sighed, “I think he wants us to settle down.”

“Abby, this spring, we all changed. Mom was finally happy, and you and me… we grew up.”

“What do you mean?” My aunt turned and frowned at me.

“The first time I saw you at school you were just like me and the girls.” I smiled, “You were a kid a heart, this mission for the Circle changed that, you grew up.”

“You really think so?” She looked sideways at me.

“Yes.” I smiled, “Of course the old you is still there sometimes.”

“That still doesn’t explain all this.” She looked up.

“Abby.” I tilted my head and raised an eyebrow, “I don’t know how old he is but I know you’re thirty.”

“So?”

“So… you’re biological clock is ticking!” I threw my hands up, for a spy at times my aunt could be pretty slow.

“You think…?” It suddenly dawned on her.

“Maybe.” I shrugged, “Sure he’s got Zach but he’s missed out on his entire childhood.”

“But I don’t want to give up field work.” Abby sighed and flopped back on the bed.

“Did Mom give up field work when I was a kid?” I asked.

“No.” Abby sighed, “I suppose not.”

“Besides, you don’t even know that’s the reason.” I told her.

“I know.” She sighed, “How was Kabul?” Quick change of topic Abby. I thought to myself.

“Fine.” I got up, “You sleep in here, I’ll go on the sofa.”

“Are you sure?” She asked.

“Age before beauty.” I teased.

“Night Squirt.” Abby smiled as I shut the door.

“Who was it?” Zach asked coming out of his room.

“A certain Aunt of mine.” I hugged him, “I’m going to sleep on the sofa.” I explained, “She’s got my bed.”
