Chapter 69

Zach

I didn’t sleep that night, I sat by the phone and computer, praying to hear something from someone.

“Nothing?” Rachel asked as she passed me a strong coffee in the early hours, almost 24 hours since Cam had been taken.

“No,” I sighed and took a sip from the steaming mug, the warm air fanning over my face. I swallowed and winced as the drink singed my throat, “I just want to know she’s okay,”

“We all do Zach,” Rachel pressed her lips in a grim line, “We all want her back.”

I refreshed the emails again and waited for it to load up, “There’s an email,” I whispered.

“What does it say?” Rachel sat up a little.

Zachary,

Don’t worry about Cameron, you can have her back when she’s had the children. Until then you will just have to be patient.

“Children?” I frowned, “What does she mean?”

“I don’t know,” Rachel shook her head, “She has her though, we should be able to trace the email,”

“What email?” Bex came in,

“Catherine’s sent us this,” I turned the screen to her, “I don’t get why she says children?”

“Twins?” Bex suggested,

“Damn it,” I whispered and looked to her, “Get Liz, now!”

Bex nodded and ran off as I got up, “Why didn’t she tell me?” I ran my hands through my hair as I paced up and down the room.

“I don’t think she knew herself,” Rachel shook her head, “She would have told you otherwise.”

“We need to find her now,” I muttered.

“Zach,” Macey came in with Bex and Liz, “Go and get breakfast, nobody can function on an empty stomach.”

“Says she who only ever ate salad!” Bex laughed.

“That was before I was burning it off every day!” Macey defended herself, “Any way, Zach,” She pointed at the door, “Go!”

“Fine,” I turned on my heel and marched through the hallways to the kitchen.

“What can I get you Zach?” Chef Louis offered, “A bacon sandwich? Fry up? Cereal?”

“Just a bacon sandwich,” I half heartedly gave him a smile as he set about the large kitchen making my request using the bacon from the frying pan and bread from a loaf that looked like it was fresh from the oven.

“We’ll have her back in no time, Zach.” He gave me an al knowing wink as I took the sandwich, “And when she is back, I’ll make her the best Creme Brûlée she has ever tasted!”

“Thank you chef,” I nodded in acknowledgement before heading back with my breakfast. On my way I passed the secret entrance to the room we had used to decipher Matt’s diary a couple of years ago. I decided I needed the space for a minute and headed along the rebuilt passage until it opened out in to a round stone room. The blackboard was here too, which surprised me. I didn’t know anyone else had been here, but there must have been, there was writing on the board.
