Adam walked home, wondering when life would stop being so hard. It had been five years since he had made the biggest mistake of his life. He regretted leaving Danny with every fiber of his being. Ever since he left he had been struggling. He had a stable job as a cashier at McDonald's but that didn't give him nearly enough money for food and rent. He was already in his eighth apartment.
"Hello Ma'am, welcome to McDonald's. Can I take your order?" Adam asked. He had grown used to the phrase. He had been saying it daily for the past five years.
"I'd like a number five and," the lady said with a pause, "I guess a number four. No. Make that two number fives."
"Two number fives?" Adam recapped as he tapped the icon on the screen.
"Yeah, oh and a number eight," She replied. Adam tapped in her order and waited.
"Is that all Ma'am?" he asked. She nodded.
"Your total is $25.84," Adam informed her. She handed him the money and he went to get her meals. Once the lady was satisfied and had left, Adam put his head on the counter. This was his life. For the past five years, he went to work and moped about his choice to leave.
He had tried to visit Danny while he was in the hospital many times but could never bring himself to actually sign his name. It hurt him so much to know that he put Danny in a hospital. He was the reason Danny had wanted to die.
After the long work day was finally over, he would go home and try to avoid the landlord. He hadn't paid rent in at least four months. It was either pay rent or eat and he was getting pretty skinny.
He hoped life would stop being as hard as it was. 'Maybe,' he thought, 'if I hadn't left, things would be different.' He sighed. There was no use in wallowing in self pity. He had made his choice and now he had to live with it. He had to accept it and move on.
"Hello. Welcome to McDonald's. Can I take your order?" He smiled. It wasn't a real smile. It'd never be a real smile. It was the fake smile he used whenever it was a necessity to be happy.
"Yeah. I want a burger!" The man boomed. He was a very tall man, he towered over Adam who was only 5' 4.
"Which burger would you like, Sir?" Adam asked, slightly startled.
"A cheeseburger with pickles. Lots of pickles! Hurry, my wife's gonna kill me if I don't show up in the next ten minutes!" The man explained. Suddenly Adam understood. His wife was pregnant and having cravings.
"Hold on," Adam replied. He walked to the back and got a jar of pickles and a fresh burger. He'd just tell the boss he had it on his lunch. He'd be fine skipping lunch for a day. He handed the man the jar while smiling.
"What's this?" The man asked, confused.
"For your wife. Congratulations. It's on me," Adam replied. The man took the food and thanked him. 'I want a baby.' Adam jumped at the thought. He couldn't have kids. Not the way he was living. Besides, if life was this hard, he'd be signing the kid's life away just by having it.
