The next day, Danny woke up with Adam next to him. They were snuggled together as if this was the last time they could be together. He got up slowly, trying not to wake Adam. He walked downstairs to the kitchen and opened the fridge. Inside was a picnic basket and a note. Danny's eyes widened. Laying gently on top of the note, was a ring. He read the note and smiled. His mother had given him the one thing she valued the most.
Danny picked up the ring and looked at it. It was beautiful, even if it was plain silver. He felt connected to the ring. His father had worn this. He looked toward the stairs, then back at the ring, then at the picnic basket. Without wasting another moment, he slipped the ring into his pocket and put the basket on the table.
"Danny?" Adam called from upstairs.
"In the kitchen," Danny replied. Adam made his way downstairs and looked up at Danny with those green eyes that drove him crazy.
"Did you sleep ok?" Adam asked. Danny nodded.
"Do you want to have lunch with me?" Danny asked.
"I'd love to!" Adam beamed.
"It's a date then," Danny smiled. Adam smiled and kissed his cheek
"It's a date."
Around noon, the two went to the park with their basket. They set up their picnic underneath of a tree. Danny looked at Adam. He was happy. He couldn't wait to ask Adam to marry him. He just hoped he'd say yes.
Adam sat down and nibbled on a sandwich. Danny did the same. They talked about their lives and the things they'd done. There were tears and smiles and flirtatious remarks. They talked until they were staring at the stars.
"You know, every night I would look up at the stars and wonder if you were looking at them too," Adam stated. Danny looked up at the stars and then back at Adam. He was staring at the sky and smiling. Danny loved him. He knew he did.
"Adam?" Danny asked, pulling the ring out of his pocket. He closed his eyes and suddenly, he knew what to say. Adam looked over at Danny. His mouth opened wide in surprise. "Will you be my husband to have and to hold until death do us part?"
"Even after death parts us," Adam replied with a smile. Danny smiled and pulled Adam close. They lay next to each other, just staring at the stars, as Danny slipped the ring onto Adam's hand.
"I love you," Danny whispered.
"I love you too," Adam replied, placing his lips gently on Danny's. They laid there for awhile, neither feeling like they had to leave. This was where they belonged, wrapped up together. Until death do them part.
