Danny returned home with a determined smile. Adam was at a job so he would have to make dinner tonight. He didn't mind it that much. Although, he'd prefer Adam to have a more stable job with stable pay and predictable hours, he was fine with Adam's work. He whipped together chicken legs and mashed potatoes and was just setting the table when he heard Adam pull into the driveway.
Adam walked up to the house looking tired and frustrated. Danny smiled at him as he entered into the kitchen. "Welcome home, handsome!"
"How was school?" Adam grumbled, limping towards Danny.
"What happened to your leg?" Danny almost screamed. He beckoned Adam closer and helped him sit into a chair. Adam's blue jeans were stained with blood.
"Calm down. I just got cut by a broken window. I was helping Miss Henderson fix the window sill and her dog came running up to me. It knocked me into the window, which broke, of course. I cut my leg on it as I fell into her garden. She wasn't too happy about that," Adam explained, wincing as Danny rolled up his pant leg.
"I'll get the first aid kit," Danny stated as he rushed into the bathroom. He returned seconds later with the small box. He pulled out the peroxide, an Ace bandage, and a tube of Neosporin. Adam nearly screamed in pain as Danny poured the peroxide onto his leg. "I'm sorry."
"God damn it that hurts!" Adam shrieked, his face twisted in pain.
"I doubt it hurts that bad," Danny replied, dabbing away the peroxide. Adam flinched, although he tried not to.
"Jesus Christ! Would you stop touching it! Ow! Danny!" Adam cried, tears falling slowly from his eyes.
"I have to clean it Adam!" Danny retorted, growing annoyed. He spread the Neosporin onto the cut and wrapped it tightly with the bandage. He looked up at Adam and gently wiped a tear away. "I didn't mean to hurt you."
"I know," Adam sniffled, "I'm sorry I shouted."
"It's ok. Are you hungry? I made dinner," Danny pointed at the table where two plates of chicken and potatoes sat.
"I'm starving," Adam replied, smiling slightly at Danny. Danny pushed Adam's chair in and sat in the spot next to him. They both seemed to stare at the empty chairs. The table was meant for four, not just two.
"Adam," Danny started, his voice barely a whisper.
"Yes?" Adam asked, looking at the chairs sadly. Mocha meowed, asking for food that was already in her bowl since this morning.
"I think we should get a baby," Danny replied, finally understanding what Adam felt.
"What?" Adam asked, snapping his attention to Danny. "Did you just say what I think you said?"
"Yes, I said I'm ready for a baby," Danny agreed. Adam beamed with happiness. He leaped from the chair and hugged Danny as tight as he could, ignoring the pain in his leg.
"Are you sure?" Adam asked, looking Danny in the eye. Danny nodded as he smiled. He hadn't been this sure since the day he'd said 'I do.' Adam had no words. His excitement filled him and all he could do was smile as he dug his head into Danny's shoulder.
"So do you want a boy or a girl?" Danny asked. The question startled Adam. He didn't know what to say. He'd never even given gender a thought. He hadn't cared about that. All he wanted was a baby.
"I-I don't know," Adam stammered. Danny only smiled.
"Don't worry, I don't know either," Danny replied. Adam smiled. They didn't have to decide. Neither one had a specific gender. They'd let the agency decide.
After dinner, they showered and got ready for bed. "Danny?"
"Yes?" Danny asked, looking at his husband.
"When do we apply?" Adam asked. Danny thought for a minute before replying.
"Whenever you want to. How about Saturday? I'm off then," Danny suggested. Adam nodded and Danny crawled into bed next to him. "Don't worry about anything. I'll take care of you both. I promise." Danny ran his finger though Adam's hair and smiled.
"I'll help too. I'm going to get a better job. One where I'll actually make enough money to help with the bills," Adam replied, looking at Danny, his eyes determined and serious.
"You don't have to," Danny explained.
"Well I'm not going to put all the pressure on you," Adam retorted, sitting up and looking down at Danny.
"Adam,"
"No! We're married! We're supposed to share the responsibilities. I've decided that I'll take the farming job at Harrison's. I know how early it is but I want to help you!" Adam exclaimed, trying not to wrinkle his face in disgust. Danny's eyes were wide in shock. Adam always talked about how much he loathed getting dirty and being around animal crap every time he had to go to Harrison's for a job.
"You're going to be a farmer?" Danny asked, stifling a laugh.
"Yes," Adam replied. Danny smiled as he looked at Adam proudly. He reached up and placed his hand on Adam's face.
"Ok," Danny smiled, running his hand through Adam's hair. Adam sighed and laid his head on Danny's chest. Danny continued to play with Adam's hair, smiling as he imagined their child coming to the door after having a nightmare and snuggling up to Adam. He slipped into a deep sleep, dreaming of the family he would soon have.
