Danny was sure to take off work to help Adam baby-proof the entire house. They put covers on the outlets, gates on the stairs, baby locks on the cabinets, and foam guards on every corner. They were ready for anything. The worker arrived the following day. Adam panicked as he rushed around his room, trying to look as presentable as possible.
"Hi," he greeted the woman, mentally smacking himself for being so informal.
"Hello Mr. Foster. I'm Malvis James. I'm here to check your home and see if it's up to par." The woman had short black hair and dark brown eyes that, if looked too closely at, seemed black. Adam shivered at the sudden coldness that seemed to follow Malvis.
"Well I'm sure you'll find everything is as it should be. We baby-proofed everything."
"Yes, well where are the chemicals?"
"In the bathroom on the highest shelf."
"And the knives?"
"In the knife holder on top of the counter."
"They'll need to be moved."
"Well how will the baby even get onto the counter?"
"It doesn't matter. I'm telling you they'll need to be moved. So move them."
"Yes Ma'am." Adam rushed into the kitchen and gently placed the knives into a drawer that was guarded by a baby lock.
"Where is the nursery?" Malvis asked, appearing out of nowhere.
"Down the hall and to the left. It's right across from the master bedroom."
"I see. So how do you think this child will react to seeing you with another man?"
"Well, I would hope the baby would be ok with it."
"What if it's not?"
"Then I don't know what to do Ma'am."
"I see. Fine. Let's go visit the nursery." They walked up the stairs and into the nursery. It wasn't complete, only half the room was painted yellow. A cradle sat in the corner on top of a small rug with a puppy on it. There was a toy box on the other side of the room but it remained empty. "It's not complete."
"I know. We're going shopping Sunday, when Danny has off."
"Alright then." Malvis wrote something in her clipboard. "Well. I'll be back if you two get a child, just to ensure it's not being neglected."
"Of course Ma'am. I'll be sure to give you a call the second a family emails me."
"Great. I must be going now." Malvis left, taking the cold air with her. Adam was grateful. She had scared him in ways he couldn't understand. For some reason, she hated him. Although, for Adam, the feeling was mutual.
