Today, our Geography teacher, Ms. Fritz, had news unlike any other.
"Our very own headmistress has at last given me permission, to allow me to take each of my classes on a two week long trip to the ocean, to discover the underwater city of Atlantica!" The whole class gasped and murmured to each other, but Belle raised her hand.
"Ms. Fritz, I read that Atlantica was only a myth. I don't think that it is possible for us to go to a place that doesn't exist." A whole bunch of wadded up pieces of paper and pencils came flying at her and she ducked her head so that she wouldn't be hit by any of them. She often got teased for being such a bookworm.
"Class!" Ms. Fritz rapped the desk with her yardstick to get our attention. "I do not tolerate this kind of behaviour in my classroom!" Then she turn to Belle. "And Miss Belle, for your statement, Atlantica is not a myth, but a legend. And legends come from true things." Then she turned back to the whole class. "Now, what I would like you to do, is to pair up with a friend for this trip. It could be dangerous, as the Atlantic can be stormy. Always have a buddy watching out for you." The whole class began to murmur again, and I felt a tap on my shoulder from behind me. I turned around and saw Eric grinning at me.
"Hey, Gianna." he said. "Do you want to partner up for the project?" I had to think for a minute. I was hoping to partner with Alice for this project. She was my best friend, after all. But she wasn't in our class and I knew that she would partner up with Wendy anyway. So I nodded.
"Okay. Sounds fun!" Eric's smile seemed to get bigger.
"Awesome! Did you know I actually live out there? That's where my parents rule!" Now that, I hadn't actually known. I knew his parents ruled out by some ocean, but I didn't know which one.
A few days later, Alice and I were packing our bags.
"I'm awful excited to be going on this trip, Gianna!" She told me excitedly, packing a pink nightgown. "But I'm also very nervous. I mean, I can't swim very well." I gave her a look as I zipped up my backpack.
"Yeah, you proved that in Wonderland, when you were too scared to leave the bottle and to get into the water." Her cheeks turned pink and she went back to packing.
Soon we were all getting on the boats. When we set sail, everyone waved us away and I ran to the bow of the ship, feeling the wind blowing my hair back and smelling the salty air. As we sailed in the early morning fog, the sailors began to sing.
"I'll tell you a tale of the bottomless blue
"And it's hey to the starboard, heave ho
"Look out, lad, a mermaid be waitin' for you
"In mysterious fathoms below." Eric ran up next to me and wrapped his arm around me, laughing."Isn't this great? The salty sea air, the wind blowing in your face . . ." I laughed with him.
"a perfect day to be at sea!"
"Oh yes . . . delightful . . . ." Muttered Grimsby, who was Eric's butler, before he leaned over the side of the ship again, getting violently sick. I grimaced.
"A fine strong wind and a following sea. King Triton must be in a friendly-type mood." One man remarked. Eric and I turned to him.
"King Triton?" he asked.
"Why, ruler of the merpeople, lad." An older sailor told him. "Thought every good sailor knew about him." Grimsby scoffed.
