Saved for Diana Potter

It was a quiet night in Gryffindor tower, but Diana wasn't feeling very good as she lay in her bed, listening to the soft snores of her dorm mates, the rain pattering outside again. She feared the dreams that had haunted her since the day she'd discovered Sirius was loose. She couldn't take it anymore.

Finally, she went down to the common room, where the fire still crackled merrily. There weren't many people down there, and it was quiet. But she was happier to be surrounded by others that were awake, rather then upstairs, shivering with fear in the dark room.

It just so happened that Fred was down there as well, finishing up his Charms homework. But when he saw Diana coming down and taking a seat by the fire, looking shaken up, he put his things away in his bag and went to sit by her.

"Hey, you alright?" He asked her. She nodded, but he could see that she was very not alright. "What's wrong?" She just shrugged.

"My dreams. They're not getting any better. They're all about Black, and Harry. I can't go a night without dreaming of one or the other." Fred stared into the fire, unsure of what to say. Usually, he could think up a joke, but it was a bit harder considering Diana's past.

"Want to play chess?" He asked lamely. "I could probably get away with borrowing Ron's chess pieces if you want to borrow Harry's." She nodded and smiled.

"Yeah, I'd like that." Fred did a victory dance in his head, before slipping up into the third year boys dormitory, grabbing the chess pieces, then slipping back down to the common room, where he and Diana set up the board and began to play.
"So, any fellows you got your eye on?" Fred asked about midway through the game.

"Pawn to E-3." She said before answering. "Not exactly. I mean, I'm very focused on taking care of Harry." She explained, her face turning red in the firelight. Fred grinned.

"Knight to D-5. Come on, Annie! There's got to be some bloke who's got your heart going! Come on, you know I won't tell." Diana sighed.

"Bishop, A-4. You first, Freddie. You're a smart, funny, good looking bloke! I'll bet there's a girl out there who makes your heart throb!" Fred leaned back.

"Oh, I've got a girl. She's beautiful." Diana hugged her knees eagerly.

"Now we're getting somewhere! Come on, details!"

"King to C-3." He said, then he blew his hair out of his face. "Well, she's beautiful, like I said. Hazel eyes that are filled with intelligence and a past of no good. Her red hair shines in the sun like fire, and it matches her mood on the right occasion. She makes me laugh a lot, and knows how to keep me and Georgie in check."

"Wait." Diana stopped him. "Red hair? Hazel eyes? But that sounds like..." Fred smirked.

"Your move." Was all he said. Diana looked to the board.

"Pawn to D-4." She murmured and the pawn moved. "Checkmate." She whispered as Fred came around to sit next to her, leaning in close.

"You want to know something, Ana?" He asked softly, and she nodded, her eyes closing. "Checkmate doesn't mean you've simply cornered the enemy king, its a declaration that the enemy king is yours."

"But this king is no enemy of mine." She told him, before leaning in... and kissing him.
