"Alright, alright, Mom!" Sam and Sammy heard as they walked past Craterside Supply. "I'll go, I'll go!" And a girl with fiery red hair, soft hazel eyes, and a face filled with freckles came out and slammed the door shut, her hands balled into fists. "Crazy, mad old bat!" She grumbled, stomping past the twins.
"Is it just me, or does she seem familiar?" Sammy asked, and Sam nodded as the girl walked down by the bomb and plunked herself into the water, soaking in the radiation.
"I thought that it was just me." Then they continued their journey to Moriarty's, praying that Lucas wouldn't get killed by Burke before they got there.
One interaction with Burke later!
"Its no use, Sam." Sammy told her sadly, checking Lucas's pulse. "He's dead."
"Goddammit!" Moriarty suddenly shouted, making the twins jump. "You had to go and let a gun fight start up, didn't you? Well, I'll have someone bury the bodies." Then he looked to Gob. "Gob! Take them out back and bury them!"
"Yes sir, Mr. Moriarty!" Gob said in his craggly voice.
"And tell Karina to get her lazy arse out here! She'll cover for you until you get back!"
"Wait, Karina?" Sammy wondered, remembering hearing that name somewhere.
"You know her?" Nova asked from where she stood. "Poor kid, even I feel bad for her."
"Why? What's wrong with her?" Sam asked, when a petite girl with soft hazel eyes and stringy black hair came from the back room, wearing only a thin looking white dress.
"That." Nova told them. "She had the misfortune of being found by Moriarty when she was being trucked around by a bunch of slavers. He bought her off, and told her that she had to pay him off for it. And since she's a kid, he doesn't pay her half of what I get."
"Is she a prostitute like you?" The words came out of Sammy's mouth like vomit.
"More like a child sex slave." Nova told them, unphased by Sammy's words. "Some days, I wonder what went through Moriarty's head when he thought he could make a whore out of a fourteen year old." Sam looked at Karina as she handed one man a bottle of beer, and handed another a box of Mentats. That was a young girl, a kid really, handing out drugs.
"Moriarty!" She shouted, making a bunch of people in the saloon jump as she headed to the back room. "What would it take for me to free Karina?" Moriarty turned in his chair, slightly bemused.
"Ah, so you've noticed our young friend. I'm afraid the only way she's getting off is by paying off her debt."
"And how much is that?" Sam demanded.
"Nearly four hundred caps. Seemed she was a bit of a bargain at the time." Sam dug through her pockets and pulled out as many caps as she could, not having many. Somehow, her father never thought to give her and Sammy an allowance down in the vault.
"One hundreds all I got." She told him, and he raised an eyebrow.
"How about an IOU? I paid good money for that girl, and I'm not going to waste it by letting her go and get herself killed out in the Wasteland!" Sam so just wanted to pull out her pistol and demand he release Karina, but she resisted.
"How about you take my caps and when I need provisions of sorts, I'll come and buy from here?" Moriarty scratched his chin, then nodded.
"Well, it appears that we have come to an agreement. Fine, you can have her. Nathan's been getting on me about past laws in America against child labor and underage sex, or something like that. It's rather annoying." Then he looked out into the saloon. "Karina! Get your sorry arse back here!" The small girl came stumbling back, looking frightened.
"Yes, Mr. Moriarty?"
"You're off the hook. You belong to her, now." Sam's eyes went wide as Karina turned to her, and she shook her head.
"What? No, I don't own you! I paid your debt. You can go free now."
