I finally found a groove between watching the scary movies from the kitchen and working on Damien's costume. It was already almost finished, the crown was drying in the garage after being spray painted, and the cape was about half finished.
"Damien, come here, I want to see how this fits on you. But you can't see it, its a surprise." I draped a blindfold over his eyes as I hooked the cape onto his shoulders. the faux fur was a nice touch instead of trying to make a weird collar. His fingers ran over the soft fabric of the inside, giving a small grin.
"Wow, Tali, this is so comfortable. I have a feeling that I'm going to really enjoy myself."
"Okay, but how does it fit? Is it alright?"
He nodded, so I took it off and shooed him away as I continued on.

It was finally Halloween night and I was done with the entire costume. I hoped that he would love it as much as I loved sewing everything together. I told him to wear his most dapper suits, all black. I opened the door to his room, and he was just putting his shirt on, I could see a small tattoo on his shoulder, a simple bass clef and treble clef formed into a heart. I reached to touch near it, and he relaxed as my fingers brushed across his skin.
"I got it after I met you, you know." He pulled up the back of his shirt, his suspenders still at his knees.
"Why a heart?" I asked.
"It was a combination of finding my love for music again, and really feeling welcome in a new place. To me, the treble clef is something beautiful, such amazing music has been composed with just a few notes and chords. You may think you're just a simple musician, but you're so much more than that." His soft whisper pierced its way through my thoughts. He sighed, "Anyway... when do I get to see this costume."
I waited for him to tuck in his shirt and pull his suspenders up, "It's in my room but you have to wear the blindfold again, it's a surprise." Damien yanked the blindfold out of my hands, roughly pulling it over his eyes before pointing forward.
"Lead the way."
Five minutes later, I had Damien in full costume. The crown, the vest I pulled together at last minute to match the cape, and of course the cape itself.
"Are you ready?" I smiled, holding the blindfold in my hands. "Okay, 3, 2, 1!" I pulled the blindfold away to reveal the cape, and raced to stand in front of him to see his expression.
Damien's black pearl ring, combined with the black crown, gold accents here and there, his evil king was perfect. A look of surprise came over him, followed by a stern gaze and silence.
"You hate it." I slumped, but his arms stopped me from sitting. He shook his head.
"I-I-....I-don't know what to say. I'm...." he sighed, tears had already formed at his eyes.
"No, no, no, you can't cry." I pushed him onto the bed, tilting his head back with my other hand. "You'll smudge your eye makeup." I realized second thought just how close I was, until his lips were on mine, his hands were on my cheeks, and his eyes were closed. Before I could pull away, he did.
"I'm sorry..." He pushed himself up, gently dabbing at his eye makeup that had smudged slightly. He grabbed a brush to lure the color back onto his eyes and smiled, "I guess it's watercolor eyes now." He cleared his throat before standing up and straightening his crown.
"So, what's first on our list?" Damien looked up at me with mischief in his eyes.
"We're planning on going to The Brass Kettle, and then we're coming back here after the trick-or-treaters' have all gone away."
