I noticed the way my cousins were drilling Desmond, it felt nice, and yet I couldn't help but feel sad. My mom kept these people away from me for 25 years, and for what? Why would she do this to me? To him? Was it just some kind of scheme to hurt him?

What did he do that was so awful? Knowing my mother, nothing.

My phone buzzed and it was Aeron.

A: Morning

*another buzz*

A: Still tired?

Me: Just overthinking. The cousins are meeting Desmond.

A: OH. What's the verdict so far?

Me: They definitely grilled him, "What are your intentions with our dear cousin?" YIKES

A: what did he say??

Me: a generic answer: that it was up to me of what I wanted

A: and what do you want?

N: I told him I can't be anything for anyone right now

A: True. You're still grieving Logan.

I sighed, still remembering the way he looked at me the day he left. Pain in his eyes, everything we couldn't say would still be unsaid.

Now he couldn't say anything ever again.

A: These things take time.

I took a deep breath, and texted back.

Me: What if it's not enough for him?

A: Then he's not the right one. You'll know.

I tucked my phone back into my pocket and walked out to see Jax holding Desmond in a grip, Desmond nodding to something and then they let go.

"Are you getting along, kids?" I laughed, standing beside the booth.

Ember and Jax look at each other and nod, Desmond simply looks up at me through his sip of coffee and nods.

He coughs a bit and nods again, "Yeah."

"Good, I don't want my cousins to scare you off."

Jax makes a face and takes a sip of his orange juice, "So uh, Natalie, we're going to get something for Uncle Tom and head to the hospital, how do you feel about joining us?"

I nod, and Desmond puts down some money and takes his keys out of his pocket. "We'll meet you there?"

Jax and Ember nod and I follow Desmond out to the car.

The four of us take an elevator up, and once we've walked down the stark white hallway, Ember pushes the button to the ICU floor and we're buzzed in immediately. We walk up to the desk, but there's no one to greet us.

"What's going on?" I wonder, I look around at the grid of lights and see room 312, flashing yellow.

Oh no. "That's his room," I speed past Desmond and run down the hallway, almost crashing into a rack of supplies. I'm almost to his room and then I see the light flashing above his door, red now. I can hear the cacaphony of voices coordinating, and then I see through the open door. Five nurses, crowding around someone. He's clearly on the floor, because there's blood. Not enough to make a pool, but someone's stepped in it. I make eye contact with a nurse and she points.

"Get her out of here!" and then I see him, and our eyes meet until I feel a force pulling me away.

"What happened?" Arms tuck around my shoulders and pull me, "Ripley!" I'm fighting whomever is pulling me, and then I hear Desmond's voice.
