Chapter 69

Colby's POV:

'Tara, are you busy'

'No, why'

'I need your help'

'With what?'

'I'll meet you outside the apartment'

Tara and I met up ten minutes later and she asked, "What's going on? You're being weirdly secretive."

I had a grin on my face. "I'm going to ask Jules to marry me."

"Finally! Ooh, I'm so exited to be in on this! Who else knows?"

"Just you."

She smiled. "I feel so special! Okay, we gotta go. Do you have a ring in mind?"

I nodded. "I've researched some rings and have subtly found what she likes. She doesn't like super flashy and she doesn't like big jewelry."

"That's a good start."

I directed her to a jewelry store and we made our way inside. We started browsing the rings and the employee smiled. "Can I help you?"

I looked up at him. "Yeah. I'm looking for an engagement ring for my girlfriend."

He smiled. "Congratulations, you two."

Tara shook her head. "We're not together. We're just friends." She pointed to a ring. "How 'bout this one?"

"Mmm, that doesn't quite seem like her."

"No, you're right. It's too flashy."

We looked at another few rings before I found the perfect one. "This is it, Tara."

She looked and nodded. "Yeah, this is definitely it."

"What's the price?" I asked, looking up at the employee.

"$525, plus tax."

"That's not that expensive, which I know she'll be happy about."

Tara laughed softly. "She does hate when you spend a ton of money on her."

I bought the ring and as we walked out, Tara asked, "When are you going to ask her?"

I thought for a moment. "I was thinking Halloween night. She enjoys Halloween, so..."

"I think that's a great idea, and I have a good feeling she'll love the ring."

"I hope so. God, this all feels so real, but so far."

"Yeah, reality will do that to you."

"I guess so. Listen, don't tell her, okay? I want it to be a surprise."

"Well, duh. I'm good at keeping secrets. I really hope it goes well, and I want to be there to see it happen."

"You're my wing-woman. Of course I'm gonna have you there."

Tara clapped excitedly. "I can't wait!"

"Me neither."
