[Three weeks after the Shadow Man series.
There are a number of POV switches in this chapter. Apologies.]
I was driving from Target after picking up some things.
I turned onto the main road at my designated light and next thing I knew, I was upside down. I could feel liquid dripping down my face. There was a metallic taste I couldn't determine. My eyes fought to stay open, but the darkness won.
Third Person POV:
Fire trucks, paramedics, and police arrived on the scene.
The driver of the second car was heavily intoxicated. The driver tried to leave, but was stopped by officers.
A paramedic pulled open the door to the blue Honda. He pulled the blonde girl out and laid her on the stretcher.
The EMT checked her blood pressure. "BP is 180 over 120, heart rate 90. She's unresponsive."
He put her in the ambulance and the ambulance drove to the hospital.
Colby's POV:
An number I didn't know called and I answered. "Hello?"
"Is this Cole Brock?"
"Yes, this is. Who is this?"
"This is Dr. Robertson at UCLA Medical Center. I'm calling about Juliet Griffin."
"What happened to her? Is she okay?!"
"She was in an accident. I'm not at liberty to tell you the status of her condition."
"Bullshit. I'm on my way."
I hung up and rushed to the hospital. I ran up to the front desk, practically tripping over people. "Juliet Griffin. I need to see her. Where is she?!"
"Sir, please calm down," a nurse said. "She's in surgery."
"Surgery?! What the fuck happened to her?!"
A woman walked up. "I'm Dr. Robertson. I believe we spoke on the phone."
I nodded, relieved to be speaking to her doctor. "What happened?"
"She came in, unconscious, with multiple contusions. She's very lucky to be alive."
"What happened to her, Doc?"
"You'll have to speak to an officer to find out more information. Excuse me." She walked off.
I ran up to an officer and asked, "Can you please tell me what happened to my fiancée?"
"That bitch ran into me!" A heavily drunk man cried.
I had to take a moment to calm myself down. Hearing him call Jules a bitch made my blood boil. Don't ever call a girl a bitch; even if you're joking.
After a moment, I walked over to his bed. "What do you mean?"
The man started sitting up and was pushed down by a nurse. "Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to lay back."
I turned to the officer. "Please. I need to know."
The officer glanced at the drunk man before turning back to me. "Your fiancée was making a left. She had the arrow and was hit head on. Her car flipped and we found her unconscious at the scene. Rest assured the doctors are doing everything they can to save her."
I made my way to the waiting room and called her family. Her brother answered. "Colby? What's going on?"
"Um, it's Jules. She's in the hospital."
"What?! What happened?!"
"Uh, a car crash. Her car was upside down and she was unconscious at the scene. They got the guy. Drunk driver."
"Fu--How is she?"
"I don't know. She's still in surgery, but I'll let you know when I hear something."
"Thanks, man."
Jackson ended the call and I sat on my phone awaiting news on Juliet.
Four hours later, Dr. Robinson came in. "Surgery was successful. It's going to take some time to recover. She's definitely a fighter."
"But?" I asked, sensing it coming.
"But, her head was hit hard on impact. She's having some memory loss."
"Can I see her?"
"I don't think that's the best idea right now, Mr. Brock."
"I want to see her. I need to see her."
Dr. Robinson sighed. "Very well. Room 413."
I made my way to Juliet's room and smiled. "Hey, babe. I'm glad to see you're okay."
She frowned, seeing me. "Well, of course I'm okay."
"You almost weren't. You gave us all quite a scare. You can ask Sam. I nearly lost my shit when I heard you were in an accident."
Her brow furrowed even more.
I eyed her curiously. "You do know who I'm talking about, right?"
"Dude, I don't know who you are or why you're in my hospital room."
"Babe, it's me."
"Me who?!" She screamed, throwing a magazine at me.
I dodged the flying projectile. "Hey! Easy. Look, my name is Colby Brock. You're my fiancée."
"I have never been in a relationship."
"Jules--"
She glared. "Get out. Now. I don't want some creep in here."
"Juliet, please. You know me."
She shook her head and screamed, "No, I don't know you! Get out of my room!"
I was ushered out and looked at her on the opposite side of the glass in defeat.
She doesn't remember me.
[Due to another story, this will remain on a Saturday posting date for the foreseeable future instead of the bi-weekly schedule.
I don't usually promote my own stories on other stories, but if you want the waterworks, check out If I Die Young. It's another Colby story; vastly different from this one.]
