Tom had just returned from a business meeting. The young man had expected that his daughter would sprint into his arms the moment he opened the door. Instead, Tom was just met by a silent house, his wife and daughter weren't sitting on the dining table working on homework like they usually would be at that time in the afternoon.

He walked up the stairs just in time to see his wife walking out of their daughter's room. Tom quickly noticed the frown on his wife's face. He wrapped his arms around her and brought her close, "What's wrong pretty girl? Is the baby alright?"

She chuckled when Tom placed his hands over her bump protectively, "The baby's fine but Lydia... She's been off ever since I picked her up from school. I tried talking to her, but she won't tell me anything."

Tom sighed. For weeks, his daughter had been acting out and misbehaving at school. It made him worry because the little four year old that he knew wouldn't even squash a bug, let alone scream at a teacher, "I'll have a talk with her, okay? You should rest."

His wife nodded and pressed a kiss to his forehead before disappearing into their room. Tom chuckled as he watched her waddle away. Ever since her bump had gotten big, she'd waddle around everywhere and he found it to be the most adorable thing ever.

Tom turned his attention back to the task at hand and knocked softly on his toddler's bedroom door, "It's dad," He heard a faint come in from the other side, so he opened the door and walked into her messy room. She had her toys scattered all over the floor and her plushies were all on her bed. Lydia had always been as stubborn as he used to be at her age when it came to cleaning up.

He took a seat on the edge of her bed after spotting his daughter cuddled up in a ball underneath the blankets. She was so small he could've easily missed her being there.

Tom started tickling her sides making her giggle, "A little birdie told the tickle monster someone was feeling sad," He spoke up in a silly voice as he kept tickling her while she laughed.

"Daddy! Stop!" She said in between laughs and crawled out of bed once Tom had stopped tickling her. She sat down next to him and looked up at him with those big brown eyes that could make him do whatever she asked.

"So, what's up?" Tom asked and she just shrugged as she looked away. He sighed, knowing he wouldn't get anything out of her, especially if she was sad. Lydia had always been one to not open up easily, just like her mother.

He stood up from the bed, "How does ice cream sound?" Lydia's eyes instantly lit up at the mention of the sugary treat. She nodded repeatedly which made him chuckle, "Well then, put on some shoes and we can go for some, okay?"

Once she had put on some shoes and Tom had told his wife where they were going, they both walked the short distance to the ice cream shop closest to their house.

Tom always loved spending quality time with his daughter to try and make up for all the time he wasn't at home. Ever since his wife had gotten pregnant again, things had been centered around their baby and Tom didn't want Lydia to feel like she meant less now that another baby was on their way. He knew she was a smart girl though and understood why they were so focused on her new sibling.

They walked into the shop and Lydia was jumping around, excited to eat one of her favorite desserts. Tom picked her up so she could see all the flavors they offered even though she always chose the same one. Ever since Lydia had discovered that red velvet and vanilla ice cream was a thing, she had fallen in love with it and would never choose anything else.

Once they both had their ice cream and Tom had paid for them, Tom handed Lydia her ice cream carefully so none of them would drop it.

Lydia guided Tom to one of the benches in the nearby park, where they could see all the dogs playing around with their owners.  They both sat down and ate their ice cream in silence for a while.

"So, what's up?" Tom asked once again. He had hoped that the ice cream would do the trick so she'd finally tell him what was wrong but she stayed quiet, "Mummy and I just want to help you, bug. If you don't tell us, we can't do anything to make things better."

Then, the last thing Tom expected to happen, happened. Lydia climbed on his lap, wrapped her arms around him as best as her little arms would allow and started crying. She buried her face on his chest as tears kept falling down her face.

The sight alone broke his heart but what she asked next made him hurt even more, "Is it true that you and mummy don't love me?" Her voice was almost as quiet as a whisper, but he had heard her question loud and clear.

"Who told you that nonsense princess? You know w-" She interrupted Tom mid-sentence and looked up at him with tears still falling down her cheeks, which he quickly wiped away, "They say that's why you leave for so long. T-that you're only having a baby to replace me."

He frowned at her words, "They? Who's they?"

"Older girls at school," It all dawned on him and his blood immediately started boiling. Tom was incredibly angry at the school, those girls from school, but most importantly, he was furious with himself for being too distracted with other things to notice the signs she had given him.

All those times she'd scream at her teachers or throw tantrums that would cause them to arrive late, it all clicked inside his head. First thing he did was wrap his arms around his daughter's small figure. He brought her as close to him as he could as tears started to fall down his face.

Tom kissed her head and reassured her, "We love you so much, bug. Wanna know how much we love you?" She nodded as a hint of a smile appeared on her face, "We love you to the moon and back. Even more than that, okay? Your baby brother or sister is not a replacement."

"You promise?" She asked and extended out her pinky finger. Tom wiped the tears that were left with his thumb and kissed both her cheeks before linking his pinky finger to hers.

"I promise," After that, Tom asked her more questions about those girls and if they had said anything else to her. He wanted to go speak to the principal the next morning and would talk to his wife about changing schools, "Okay, now, why don't we go to the supermarket and buy some snacks? Then we can have a movie night with mum, how does that sound?"

After a while of talking to his wife about everything Tom had told her, he found himself on the couch watching Cinderella with his wife and daughter as he cuddled both of them. He loved them and the little baby on their way with all his heart, he'd never have life any other way.
