Chapter 41: The Final Curtain Finale

As soon as the giant hand of green smoke touched me, my entire surrounding changed. I was in a forest with dense trees as far as the eye could see.

It was really dark out with only the moon to provide me with light, though thanks to how high and dense the trees were, the moonlight was barely coming through. The whole scene looked rather ominous to me, and I think that was the plan.

I decided to walk around, being mindful of where I was going. For all I knew, all of this was nothing more than an illusion. Special effects to get me off my game. None of it was real.

And yet, despite that, [Danger Sense] was going off like crazy. It felt something was going to jump me at any time.

This doesn't feel like when Drake used his regular illusion magic. That's probably because not only does everything look like a forest, but I can also even smell it. I could smell the wet leaves and grass all around me.

This was definitely different from his usual illusions. Something tells me that this place was a lot more than just some mirage.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something move. Turning towards the source, I saw the bushes rustle. There's something behind them.

Was it Drake?

"Hey, Drake, is that you?" I did it on a whim, but I would soon regret it.

Coming out of the bushes was a large wolf lunging towards me. I quickly ducked and rolled away from it. Once I got far enough away, I pointed Thana at the wolf.

It looked up at me with a glare, then started to snarl at me. It was a very unusual wolf, due to its fur being all green. I could feel [Danger Sense] warning me about the wolf. This was weird since the wolf shouldn't be real, yet I was getting danger signs from the get-go.

There was only one reason why it felt like this wolf was a threat to me.

"I know it's you, Drake. Though I have to say, I'm loving the new look." If everything here was fake, then [Danger Sense] was warning me about the wolf because it was Drake in disguise.

However...

"Close, but no cigar." I heard his voice from behind me and turned around to see him.

What? How is that possible? [Danger Sense] is telling me that the wolf was a threat, yet Drake's standing before me.

Wait, this could just be Drake's way of tricking me. Like I'm stupid enough to fall for that!

"Nice try, bastard!" I then swung at the illusion of Drake...only it wasn't an illusion.

As soon as I was about to hit him to make him turn into a puff of smoke, he grabbed my hand. Yeah, he grabbed me.

"W-what the hell?" I was dumbfounded by this. He shouldn't be able to touch me. He's not even real, so why?

"Looking a little troubled, are we?" Drake leaned in close enough to where I can smell his breath.

Was he real? If that's the case, then what about the wolf? I turned to see the wolf, and [Danger Sense] was still targeted on it. Just what the hell is going on?

"Oh, I'll be taking that," Drake said as he reached for his mask. I was too surprised by what was happening to stop him.

Once the mask was out of my hand, Drake backhanded me to the ground. Yeah, that was pain, so he's definitely real.

Then, that would mean the wolf was fake...right? There was a hint of doubt growing in my mind, tempting to overwhelm me.

[Danger Sense] was telling me the wolf was dangerous, so that means it had to be real. But Drake just hit me, and I felt pain, so he had to be real too.
