The Devil You Know

After finding Ian Thomas dead all the girls were really shaken up, none of them really sure what to think or feel about it

At that moment they were gathered around a table in the school courtyard looking at a picture of Ian's confession note on Emily's iPad.

"Is this a suicide note or a confession?" Aria asked

"It's both." Spencer said

"Emily... How do you have this?" Aria asked

"I sent it to her." Hanna said "I took a picture with my phone before we called the cops."

"It's weird," Lily shook her head "Why would Ian kill himself just as he was about to skip town with Melissa?"

"Maybe he realised he was gonna get caught." Spencer said "He couldn't hide forever, even with Melissa and Wren's help."

"He was probably desperate." Aria added

"Look, who cares why Ian did it?" Hanna interrupted "The important thing is, Ali's killer is dead and we're no longer people of interest."

"Why am I not feeling relieved right now?" Emily asked and Lily knew what she was feeling, because Lily felt the same

"Oh, Em, come on. For months, we've been about as welcome in this town as a cold sore," Aria said "And plus, now people know that we've been telling the truth. And Ian is out of our lives for good."

"Yeah... but "A" isn't." Emily said

"Can we please just slay one dragon at a time?" Spencer asked and she noticed Garrett coming towards them so she quickly switched off the laptop

"Hey." Garrett said

"Hey." Lily said "What are you doing here?"

"I just came to return some evidence we took from the field hockey office." Garrett explained "Hey, um, look, I just wanted to say that I'm sorry you all had to be the ones who found him."

"Melissa's the one who found him." Spencer said

"I'm sorry. Then again, could have been worse." He said

"What do you mean?" Aria asked

"Bodies decay. He'd been dead at least a week." He explained "Give my best to your family."

"Yeah." Spencer nodded and he left them

"A week?!" Hanna whispered "No, that's impossible. He was texting Melissa."

"No, he wasn't." Lily said "I'm betting it was "A"."

"Why would "A" pretend to be Ian and then lead us there to his body?" Aria asked

"Does it matter?" Spencer shrugged "The guy was scum, and now he's dead scum. Who cares if "A" found him first?"

"What does "A" want?" Emily asked

"You know what I want? I want to enjoy my life again... before "A" finds another way to ruin it." Hanna said and they all got up from the table but Emily stayed

"Are you coming?" Lily asked her

"No, you guys go ahead." She said

"Em, what is it?" Lily asked

"We now know "A" is involved. Doesn't that make you nervous?" Emily said

"Yeah... But not as much as Ian did." Lily nodded "You and I can sort this out later okay? I just need today to breathe properly,"

"So you don't think Ian killed Ali?" Emily asked

Lily paused "No. I know he didn't. But we'll deal with it later." Emily nodded and Lily headed to class
