The trial for Mona's death seemed to be never ending and from her seat in the crowd, Lily could swear the clock would tick slower if she looked at it. So instead she tried to focus on keeping her eyes open as the prosecution spoke
"Counsellor, will you call your next witness, please?" The judge said to Mr Sirk who stood up
"The Commonwealth calls Lesli Stone to take the stand." He announced and the girls sitting next to Lily gasped as they watched a short, red-headed woman make her way up to the stand
"Who's she?" Lily whispered to her friends
"A friend of Mona's," Emily sighed "I knew she was trouble."
"Where's she been all this time?" Aria asked
"Probably took her a while to cross the River Styx." Spencer replied
Lesli had to swear on the Bible before she sat down, but not before glaring at the four girls in the audience
"So you hadn't seen your friend since the school year began, but you were in constant communication?" Mr Sirk asked her
"Mona and I talked on the phone a lot." She nodded "We grew very close last summer. We texted all the time."
"And on one occasion, Mona actually sent you a card, correct?" He asked
"Yes."
"And in this card, mailed two weeks before Thanksgiving, what did Mona tell you?" He asked
"She was having a hard time, and she had been threatened by her." Lesli answered, pointing at Alison at the end
"And what was the nature of this threat?"
"Ali said if Mona opened her trap about the fake kidnapping that she'd be eaten by worms." Lesli said
"Objection. Hearsay." Rebecca called
"The witness is quoting the victim, Your Honour." Mr Sirk replied "It's all in the card."
"Objection overruled." The judge nodded
"And why have you decided to share this card with us now, Lesli?" Mr Sirk asked the girl
"I couldn't find it." She said "It came during midterms, and I stuck it in a textbook. And honestly, I didn't take it seriously enough."
"Why?" He asked
"Everyone has feuds in high school." She shrugged "I didn't realise what Mona was dealing with until it was too late. And then, when I came to see her mom, um..."
"What happened then?" He asked
"I realised something weird was going on." She said "Even though Alison was already locked up, her friends were all on edge about anyone asking any questions, or touching Mona's things. I was practically attacked by Mona's boyfriend for borrowing a book from her room."
"Do you think that Alison's friends were hiding something to protect her?"
"Yes." She said "One of them, Hanna Marin, wouldn't even let me go into Mona's bedroom. She stalked me the entire time I was in Rosewood."
Spencer sighed and pulled out her phone "What are you doing?"
"Calling Caleb." She said and hurried out of the courtroom, Lily followed too. Not to call Caleb, she just needed air
Lily walked out of the front of the courtroom and perched herself on the steps to the pavements
She wasn't able to be alone for long, before Emily, Aria, and Spencer hurried out and they dragged her back to Spencer's car so they could all get back to Spencer's house
