While it had been an unsuccessful search to prove Ezra was A for Spencer, Emily, Hanna, and Lily. Aria actually discovered something much darker about who he had been all along
It turned out those had been Ezra's whiteboards in Ravenswood and he had been collecting information on all the girls, including Alison, for years, and he had known everything about them before he even met them
And apparently he had been using all this information to create a book about them and the mystery of Ali's disappearance
"Did you actually read any of this book?" Spencer asked Aria cautiously. All of them had immediately rushed over to Aria's house when she called them and they were sat around the small girl, who was curled up in the corner of her sofa like a baby
"A few pages. Bits and pieces." She sniffed "Ezra knew who I was before we met. He knew who all of us were. And he knew Alison too."
"So he admitted to being in a relationship with her?" Emily asked
"Yeah, a brief one."
"Lily," Spencer turned to the brunette "Did you ever know about this?"
"No, whenever Ali talked about seeing an older guy I assumed she always meant Ian, I never thought there was more than one," She replied
"Then he must be Board Shorts." Hanna said
"Well, Ezra didn't try to kill Alison." Aria replied "His whole book is trying to piece together who did it."
"How is he gonna do that when the police can't even figure it out?" Lily asked
"I don't know." She glanced around at the girls nervously "He has a theory though."
"And? What is it?" Emily asked
"He thinks that one of us did it." She answered. The room fell silent for a moment as all of the girls looked at each other. Somewhere deep down they had each always known there was a possibility one of them could do and hide something like that, but knowing that Ezra thought it too put them all on edge.
"You're kidding, right?" Spencer scoffed
"Well, now we know it's a work of fiction." Emily said
"Which one of us is he trying to pin it on?" Lily asked
"I didn't get that far."
"You didn't think to ask?" Spencer asked
"Why? We know that that's not true." Aria said
Lily had a sinking feeling, Aria might not have read far enough to know who Ezra thought killed Ali, but she had a horrible feeling he was going to blame her for it since he had known Ali, and she was closest to her
"Just because he wrote a book doesn't mean he's not A." Emily said "You know, he could be using it as a way to place the blame on one of us and keep suspicion off of him."
"No, he doesn't need to do that. He knows that Ali's alive." Hanna replied
"But he didn't know that when he started writing the book." Spencer added
"Guys, listen," Aria interrupted "Ezra's not A. He's a writer who found a great opportunity to make a name for himself and he used me. He used us."
"So wait, what are we saying, that all of that stuff in that room in Ravenswood, that was just research for his book?" Spencer asked
"He's been working on it for years."
"Well, we've seen the surveillance equipment, so we know he's been watching us." Hanna said
