Don't Answer the Phone

The day started off just as any normal day would. Rachel woke up, got dressed, ate breakfast, brushed her teeth and went off to school. Nathan hadn't been at school the day before, but Rachel didn't think much of it. She figured he was probably sick, or just didn't feel like going.

When Rachel got to school she could tell something was off with Nathan. He was acting differently around her, but it was only a tiny bit different, that at first Rachel thought she had imagined it. It wasn't like he forced himself to make eye contact with her, but when he did she saw pain in his eyes. He was stiff around her, he seemed careful around her. Rachel wanted to ask him what was wrong, but she couldn't find the chance.

She couldn't ask him in photography because it would probably cause more trouble with Mr.Jefferson, and there was no way she wanted to have that conversation in front of Mr.Jefferson. She didn't see him again until lunch, but she couldn't ask him then because Victoria was there, and she felt like it would be better if Victoria wasn't there. Rachel didn't have any classes with Nathan for the rest of the day, but she would hopefully be able to catch him before he left school.

After homeroom finished Rachel ran to her locker, which was right next to Nathan's in hopes to find him there. Rachel got there right as Nathan was walking away. "Nathan." Rachel said, and Nathan looked to see who called his name. When he saw Rachel he seemed worried. "Now isn't a good time Rachel." Nathan said.

"I haven't had the chance to talk to you all day though."Rachel said.

"Rachel, I really have to go."

"Nathan I just wanted to know if you're ok, you seemed different today." Rachel noticed as Nathan's face changed to surprise. It was like of all the things she could have asked him that was the least likely. "Ya, I'm fine. I'm just tired." Rachel knew he was lying to her, and she was pretty sure that Nathan knew she knew.

Then Nathan said something she hadn't expected him to say, "If I ever call you in the future, don't pick up.". Rachel noted that Nathan had said that so quietly she barely heard him. "What, why not?" Rachel asked.

"I can't tell you that, I just need you to promise me you won't answer the phone."

"Ok, I promise."

"Thanks, I have to go now." Nathan said, and left.

Once Rachel got in the car with Chloe she told her all about what happened with Nathan. "Why would he call you, but not want you to answer? If he didn't want to talk to you, why would he call you?" Chloe asked.

"I'm not sure, maybe so he can tell someone that he called me, without having to talk to me."

"That's weird."

"Ya."

That night Chloe and Rachel were doing homework in Chloe's room when Rachel's phone started ringing. "Can you see who it is?" Rachel asked, since her phone was closer to Chloe. "It's Nathan." Chloe said. Chloe and Rachel looked at each other, they could both tell that the other was just as curious. "We have to trust him, don't answer it." Rachel said, and Chloe let it ring until it stopped ringing.

"For the record, I trust you, not him." Chloe stated.

"Good enough." Rachel replied.

That night as Rachel laid in bed she couldn't stop thinking about why Nathan didn't want her to answer him. She knew she had to ask him at school the next day.

The next day Rachel got to school early so she would have a chance to talk to Nathan before school started. She had been waiting for 5 minutes when she saw him. "Nathan we need to talk." she said, grabbing him and pulling him behind the school.

"Why did you call me last night if you didn't want me to answer?"

"Who do you think was around when I called you?" Nathan said. All of a sudden everything clicked into place. Nathan was in TDR with Mr.Jefferson, he had probably made Nathan call her for some reason. "Oh." Rachel said.

They stood there in silence for a while until Rachel asked: "Nathan what's wrong?".

"I tried to get Mr.Jefferson to take down the video of Kate, it didn't work."

"That's ok, at least you tried."

"Ya, I'm going to keep trying."

"That's good.". There was another silence until Rachel asked: "Is that all that's bothering you?"

"Ya."

"Ok. I'm sure you'll find a way to get the video taken down.". Rache; said, not quite believing him. Rachel was about to walk away when Nathan said: "I'm sorry.". Rachel had figured it was about what happened with Kate. She knew what he did to Kate was terrible, nothing and no apology could change that, but it wasn't like Nathan wanted to do it. "It's ok Nathan." Rachel said.

After school Rachel explained to Chloe why Nathan had called her last night. "Good thing we didn't answer." Chloe said. "Ya, I wouldn't want Mr.Jefferson listening in my conversations. "See, I knew I could trust you." Chloe said, and Rachel laughed.

Sorry this wasn't the best chapter but I really didn't want to rewrite it. Also sorry I haven't been updating much, I will try to be more consistent. Thank you for reading.
