Third Wheel

 It was a few days later and Mr.Jefferson was forcing Nathan to ask Rachel to hang out. Nathan didn't know what they were supposed to do though. Obviously Nathan didn't have feelings for Rachel, he liked her as a friend but nothing more, but everything he thought of could be taken the wrong way. For example, they couldn't go see a movie together, they couldn't get coffee together, Nathan thought maybe an Arcade, but even that could be taken the wrong way. Nathan finally landed on the idea to ask Rachel what she wanted to do, he was sure there would be something that she would be able to think of that he had forgotten about.

The next day at school Nathan went up to Rachel and said; "Hey um I'm not doing anything on Friday, I was wondering if you wanted to do something?"

"Oh, well I was going to go to the mall with Chloe on Friday, but you can come if you want." Rachel replied.

"Are you sure?"

"Ya, of course."

Friday night

Nathan met up with Chloe and Rachel at the bookstore. He knew when he saw them because Chloe was the one flipping him off and Rachel was the one smacking Chloe's arm down. "Hey." he said, walking up to them.

"Hi." Rachel replied. There was an awkward silence until Rachel said: "Nathan Chloe was just telling me about how much she liked the Maze Runner series, didn't you tell me you started reading that?"

"Ya, I'm almost finished The Scorch Trials." Nathan replied

"Newt dies in the next book." Chloe said with a smile on her face.

"Your kidding." Nathan said, partly annoyed that Chloe spoiled the book, partly sad and partly not believing Chloe."

"I'm serious." Chloe added a dramatic tone to her voice "Do it before I become one of them. I. Kill me." Chloe went back to her normal voice and said; "Then something about Newt's last grip of sanity." Chloe once again returned to her dramatic voice "Please, Tommy. Please. Then Thomas shoots him."

"Wait, he shot his boyfriend?" Rachel asked, confused.

"No Rachel, I told you they're not actually dating, everyone just ships them."

"Oh." Rachel said, still sounding confused.

"Maybe if you read the books you would know."

"I will read them, if you read Percy Jackson."

"I told you, I'm not reading that Greek Mythology fanfiction."

"It's not fanfiction, and there's Nico Di Angelo, he's like the male version of you.".

Nathan stood there awkwardly, he was pretty sure that they have had this argument many times, and forgot he was even there. After a bit more arguing Chloe seemed to realize Nathan was there and said: "Prescott have you read Percy Jackson?"

"No, but I saw the movies." Nathan watched in confusion as Chloe smiled. Then he realized why Chloe was smiling, "Nathan did you just tell me you watched the movies, why would you do that?" Rachel exploded and proceeded to list off many reasons why the movie sucked, and why she will not be watching the next one.

"It's ok Nathan, I have multiple copies of The Lightning Thief, one of which is at Chloe's house not being read" Rachel said, glaring at Chloe "but I'll lend you the other.".

"So, what store do you guys want to go to next?" Rachel asked.

"I don't care." Nathan replied.

"Ok well then let's go buy something David would hate." Chloe said, walking away. Nathan clearly looked confused because Rachel said: "David is her stepdad."

Nathan followed Chloe and Rachel around as they looked for the most revealing crop top they could find. "Are you even going to wear this?" Rachel asked after Chloe bought a pink crop top that definitely looked like something a conservative stepfather would have hated. "I'll wear it around the house." Chloe responded.

The rest of the night just felt really awkward, Nathan followed Chloe and Rachel around as they bought stuff, not buying anything for himself. He barely said a word, and Rachel and Chloe didn't really talk to him. He was definitely third-wheeling, but he also wanted to watch as Rachel was having a good time with her girlfriend because he knew that wouldn't last long.
