Are you close with Victoria?

 It was nearing the end of October, Nathan and Rachel still didn't have a plan to get Nathan away from the room under the barn. Mr.Jefferson had kept his distance from Nathan ever since he came to school with a bruised eye, but Nathan knew that wouldn't last forever.

Nathan was finding it harder and harder to keep it all from Rachel, he never really had anyone to talk to before Rachel. Though now that Rachel was there, it was hard to resist the urge to not tell her about everything. The two things stopping him was, he had no idea what Mr.Jefferson would do to Rachel, and he was also pretty sure his dad could do way more than just hit him in the face.

Every time Nathan was in photography class he would start to pack up all his stuff 5 minutes early so he could get out of there as fast as possible, which is what he was doing this time. Except when he went to leave Mr.Jefferson said: "Nathan can I talk to you?". Nathan could tell Rachel had also picked up on this which made him feel a bit better. If Rachel had just happened to figure out that Mr.Jefferson was threatening Nathan to do things he didn't want to do it wasn't his fault. "Sure." Nathan replied, and followed Mr.Jefferson behind the school.

"Nathan I just want to ask you something."

"What?"

"How close are you with Victoria?"

"I talk to her, I mean ever since I started hanging out with Kate and Rachel we have started to drift apart, but I would say we are still friends. Why?". Nathan didn't want to tell Mr.Jefferson all of this, it wasn't any of his business, but he felt like it would be better to be completely honest than be caught not telling the full truth.

"Ok, I want you to stay friends with Victoria, try to hang out with her more, but make sure you also stay friends with Kate and Rachel."

"So you want me to be better friends with Victoria while staying friends with Kate and Rachel? I don't know if you have noticed this, but Kate and Rachel hate Victoria, and Victoria hates them."

"Well, you are going to have to figure out a way around that."

"I heard Victoria tried to drug Rachel in the Tempest play last year, so she could be Prospera on stage, how am I supposed to find a way around that?"

"I don't know Nathan, but you will have to figure it out, but don't worry, you have a while to make it happen."

"How long is a while?"

"Let's say you have multiple months."

"Ok."

"Now I have to get back to work.". Mr.Jefferson said and left. Nathan was angry, it wasn't fair for Mr.Jefferson to just go around telling him who to hang out with.

When Nathan walked back in the school Rachel said: "Nathan what was that about?"

"Nothing."

"Nathan you can tell me."

"Don't worry it was nothing."

"Nathan, is he the reason you had a bruise on your eye a couple of weeks ago."

"No, nothing like that."

"Ok, but Nathan if you ever feel like something is really wrong you can talk to me, or principal Wells."

"I know, but don't worry I'm fine."

"Ok." Rachel said knowing she wasn't getting anything else out of him.

Later at lunch, Kate and Rachel were waiting for Nathan to come to sit with them when they saw Nathan go sit down with Victoria. Rachel was a little surprised by this, she wasn't mad about it in a petty way, Nathan had the right to hang out with whomever he wanted, but she thought Nathan trusted her. She couldn't shake the feeling that Nathan was telling Victoria about what happened with Mr.Jefferson.

Once school was over, as usual, Chloe was waiting for Rachel in her truck. Once Rachel got in the truck Rachel said: "So today Mr.Jefferson told Nathan he wanted to talk to him, I don't know where they went, and I have no idea what Mr.Jefferson said but Nathan wouldn't tell me. Then at lunch, he usually sits with Kate and I, but he went to sit with Victoria today, which is fine. He can sit with whoever he wants, but I thought he trusted me enough to tell me stuff. Also what if the reason he had that bruise a couple of weeks ago is because of Mr.Jefferson."

"Maybe Nathan's just showing his true colours, maybe he was using you and Kate for something, and he got whatever it was and he is back to being a dick. If you think about it, he was talking to Mr.Jefferson, probably giving him some sort of information, he wouldn't tell you what he was talking about, and he is now back to hanging out with Victoria."

"I don't think so, Nathan is a terrible liar, when he started to hang out with Kate and I, he hated us, then he started hanging out with us voluntarily, and telling me what he knew about Mr.Jefferson. I don't think he would just ditch Kate and I without an explanation."

"I think he just did. Nathan may be a bad liar, but when he wants something he gets it, and if he needs to be close with you and Kate to get it, then that's what he did. Now that he has whatever it is he wanted he doesn't need you and Kate anymore."

"Ya, but over the past few months I got to know Nathan, he wouldn't do that to Kate and I. Something else is going on with him.".
