Percy first sees Annabeth at Starbucks. He was dodging his phone's non-stop buzzing about dinner that Friday when he heard her. She had been short a literal penny and the cashier must have been having a bad day or something because he wouldn't forgo said cent.

"I'll pay for her." Percy stepped out from behind her.

Her brows furrowed as she turned to face him. He could see a look of disdain etched into her ethereal face. "Thank you, but that's alright, I know I have change somewhere in my bag." Percy handed the cashier his card and paid for her coffee. She sighed indignantly, but thanked him anyway. "Why would you do that?"

"What do you mean?" he asked, looking at her funnily, like she'd cracked some over-the-top joke.

"Why would you pay for my coffee? Do you want something from me? I will not perform any sexual favors, you creep," she huffed and turned away from him. The barista called her name before handing her the coffee.

"I'm trying to do that 'pay it forward thing.' " Her face switched from angry, to something unreadable, back into angry again.

"You're supposed to pay for the person behind you, you seaweed brain." He snorted at that.

"Seaweed Brain?" He was clearly smitten with her. The corners of his mouth twitched as he bit back a smile.

"You have some kind of problem with this?"

"You don't know my actual name and yet you find it appropriate to come at me, and insult me with this strange nickname." She shrugged and shook athe sugar packets into her steaming cup.

"You look like a guy from the Baywatch movies, so my brain just kinda went 'beach.' " She emphasized her point by opening her hand, but when it was clear he didn't know who she was referring to she shrugged and then blushed as she took a desperate sip from her coffee.

"Which one?" He bumped her shoulder earning him an indignant look as they found a booth and settled in.

"Moving on, please..." The blinds were up at the window where their booth was and the sun hit her golden curls so perfectly she could be easily mistaken for a princess in a Disney movie. Her blush was quite evident still but he couldn't bring himself to care as she blinked her long lashes and sipped her coffee like she was some kind of fucking coffee goddess. Which, if we're being completely fair here, is a pretty good reason to not care about your girlfriend texting you about dinner with her parents that Friday. "—Phone."

He blinked out of his daze. "What?"

"Your phone keeps buzzing."

"Yeah." She nodded her head in an 'I know but get on with it' manner.

"Is everything okay?" She laughed to relieve the tension from his obvious staring. He looked down to get an understanding of why his phone decided that this was the time to be rude. He was relieved to see that it was just Rachel going on about something he really couldn't give two shits about at the moment. He should, but it was hard when there was a pretty girl that made him feel alive, and who was distracting him by drinking her coffee.
