Anele's smile was as bright as the sun shining, she walked into the restaurant at midday all smiles. Her job interview had went well and she had hope that she would get the job and get to leave this place. Beatrice, the manager cornered her just as she was about to leave the locker room, after changing into her waitressing outfit. Anele was in too much of a good mood to let Beatrice's foul mood affect her.

" You're late!" Beatrice.

" No I'm not."

" You're on double shift today. Which means you were supposed to be here at nine."

Beatrice scolded.

" I gave her the morning off, she came to ask you yesterday but found that you had already left. Hence Chris came in her place." Kyoko

This was the first time Anele was grateful for her former girlfriend , Kyoko's presence. Being that Beatrice had left early the day before and Kyoko was in the office balancing the books, she had gone to her to ask for the morning off, since her interview was at nine.  Anele smiled, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. She had unintentionally dodged a bullet by asking Kyoko for the morning off.

" Oh I'm sorry."

Beatrice who was just glaring at Anele turned with a huge smile towards Kyoko, who just lifted her left eyebrow in acknowledgment. Anele knew how cold Kyoko could be if she did not know you, like you or was hurt by you. She has been at the receiving end of her stone heart. Beatrice walked out with her head down.

" Thank you."

Anele said gratefully as she tried to walk past her but Kyoko blocked her exit with her body.

" For what?"

" For the morning off and coming to my rescue."

Anele was no longer smiling but she was not as cold as she had been in the past, since Kyoko showed up but Kyoko was grateful that she was at least talking to her.

" You're welcome, what was so important that you had to take the morning off? _ If you don't mind me asking."

Anele shook her head as a smile planted itself on her face. Kyoko could not help but smile back as she watched her smile grow wider but then she understood that she was smiling like this because of whatever happened this morning.

" You'll know soon enough but I really need to start my shift before Beatrice cuts more of my pay."

" Don't worry she won't be doing that or troubling you in the future."

Kyoko thought this would get her points from Anele but it did the opposite.

" I don't want you interfering with my job. I got this job on my own and I can keep it. I don't want the staff thinking I'm getting favours from you."

Anele's response caught Kyoko off guard.

"I understand,"

Kyoko said quietly, her voice laced with disappointment.

"I apologise if it seemed like I was trying to interfere or offer favors. That was not my intention at all. I just thought it would be helpful for you to know that you won't have to worry about Beatrice anymore."

Anele's expression softened slightly as she listened to Kyoko's explanation. She realized that maybe she had overreacted and jumped to conclusions too quickly.

"I appreciate your concern, Kyoko."

Anele said, her tone more genuine. She smiled then attempted to walk out of the locker room, Kyoko had removed the arm blocking her exit but just as she stepped out, Kyoko grabbed her waist. While still in shock Anele felt Kyoko's lips on hers. Anele was taken aback by the sudden kiss. Confusion and surprise flooded through her. She immediately pushed Kyoko away.

"What are you doing?!"

Anele exclaimed, her voice filled with disbelief and anger. Kyoko's expression was a mix of apology.

"I... I'm sorry, Anele_ I-."

Anele turned away from Kyoko, her mind racing with conflicting emotions.
