" You look good tonight."
Anele swooned as Kyoko kissed her on the cheek. They were out on a date and her children were with her parents. Anele placed her flowers on an empty seat on the table before seating down in the chair Kyoko had pulled out for her. Waiters pushed trolleys towards them as soon as Kyoko raised her hand. They ordered their favorite dishes and engaged in lighthearted conversation, enjoying each other's company. Anele couldn't help but feel lucky to have rekindled her relationship with Kyoko.
As they indulged in their meal, Anele noticed a familiar couple seated nearby. It was her ex-girlfriend and her new partner, sharing a laugh and clinking their wine glasses together. Anele's heart skipped a beat, and she discreetly looked away, not wanting to let the sight affect her evening with Kyoko.
Kyoko, sensing her discomfort, reached across the table and gently squeezed Anele's hand. Anele managed a smile, appreciative of Kyoko's understanding and support. She knew deep down that her past was behind her, that she had moved on from her failed relationship but seeing her ex-girlfriend in such a happy state still stirred up feelings of hurt and longing.
Throughout the night, Kyoko continued to shower Anele with compliments and affection, constantly reminding her of how beautiful and special she was. Each word and gesture helped to ease Anele's lingering thoughts and doubts. With Kyoko by her side, she felt cherished and desired in a way she hadn't in years.
Kyoko, ever perceptive, noticed Anele's change in demeanour.
"What's on your mind, my love?"
she asked softly, reaching out to brush a strand of hair behind Anele's ear. Anele took a deep breath, her eyes locking with Kyoko's.
"I just... I worry about how my children, I haven't really asked them how they feel about our relationship and if the end of my relationship with Bai affected them in anyway. As a mother I try not to bring different people in their lives, hence I stayed single for a long period before meeting Bai and I don't want to make it seem like that's what I'm doing."
Kyoko squeezed her hand reassuringly, her eyes filled with understanding.
"I understand and I'm glad you mentioned that because there's a reason I asked you out to dinner."
Anele's eyes went wide when Kyoko stood up, pushed her chair back and got down on one knee, after pulling out a red small velvet box from her pocket.
"Anele, ever since we met, you have brought so much love and joy into my life. I have fallen deeply in love with you, and not just with you, but with your children as well. They are a part of who you are, and I want to be there for all of you. So, I wanted to ask you, Anele, will you marry me?"
Anele's eyes welled up with tears as she stared at Kyoko, feeling overwhelmed with both shock and happiness. She nodded vigorously, not trusting her voice at that moment. Kyoko beamed with joy, slipping the ring onto Anele's finger and pulling her into a warm embrace.
As the restaurant erupted into applause and cheers, Anele noticed a visibly irritated Bai leave the restaurant with her partner in tow. Kyoko was smiling, for a split second Anele wondered if Kyoko deliberately proposed at this restaurant knowing Bai would be here. Anele quickly dismissed the thought, there was no way Kyoko could know.
" Are you regretting your decision already?"
Kyoko noticed her far away look as she ate her dessert. Anele shook her head smiling.
" No I'm just wondering if we're not rushing into this."
They had just started dating less than a year after all.
" We've known each other since high school, I made a mistake that almost cost me you but now that I've got you back, I'm not wasting any second."
