Chapter 115. A Rougarou

Deans POV

Ana, Travis and I are standing by a table, fixing gas cans to use against the rougarou when Ana looks at Travis. "So fire, huh?" She asks. "The only way I found to kill these bastards; deep-fry 'em." Travis says. "Well, that's gonna be...horrible. Is that what you did to Jack's dad?" I ask him. "Uh-huh." Travis hums as Sam comes into the room from outside, papers in hand.

"Not wasting any time, are you?" Sam asks us. "None to waste. The guy hulks out, we won't be finding bodies, just remains." Travis says as Sam sits down on the bed next to the table. "What if he doesn't hulk out? I did a little homework. Uh, I've been checking out the lore on rougarous." Sam tell us and Travis raises his eyebrow.

"What? My 30 years of experience not good enough for you?" He asks. "What? No. No. I-I-I just wanted to be prepared. I mean, not that you didn't..." Sam stammers before I speak up. "Sam loves research. He does. He keeps it under his mattress right next to his KY. It's a sickness." I say as Sam gives me a look. "It is." I defend and he shakes his head.

"Look, everything you said checks out, of course, but uh, I found a couple of interesting stories about people who have this rougarou gene or whatever. See, they start to turn, but they never take the final step." Sam explains. "Really?" Ana and I ask. "See, if they never eat human flesh, they don't fully transform." He adds.

"So what? Go vegan, stay human?" I ask sarcastically. "Basically. Or in this case, eat a lot of raw meat, just now..." Sam starts before Ana finishes his sentence. "Long pig." She says. "Right." Sam nods as Travis is sitting next to him, having watched and listen to Sam in silence.

"Good on you for die diligence, Sam." He says as he gets up. "But those are fairy tales." He tells him as he walks over to the little pantry and pours himself another cup of coffee. "Fact is, every rougarou I ever saw or heard of...took that bite." He says. "Okay, well, that doesn't mean Jack will." Sam says as he stands up. Me and Ana share a look before we follow, and stand up.

"So what do we do? Sit and hope and wait for a body count?" Travis asks Sam. "No, we talk to him. Explain what's happening. That way he can fight it." Sam tells him. "Fight it?" Travis laughs. "Are you kidding me? You ever been really hungry? I mean, haven't-eaten-in-days hungry?"

"Yeah." Me and Ana nod. "Yeah. Right then. So somebody slaps a big, juicy sirloin in front of you, you walking away?" Travis asks him. I don't say anything but admit I wouldn't as I raise my eyebrow before I look at Ana and Sam. "That's what we are to him now, meat in legs. I'm sorry. I'm sure he's a stand up guy, but it's pure, basic instinct. Everything in nature's gotta eat. You think he can stop himself because he's nice?" Travis asks.

"I don't know. But we're not gonna kill him unless he does something to get killed for." Sam says in a firm, serious tone. Ana and I look over at him as he takes a few deep breathes and leaves the room. Travis looks over at us, a bit puzzled by Sam's reaction. "What's up with your brother?" Travis asks me as I look at the door then Travis. "Don't get me started." I tell him.

Later, we drive down the road, me behind the wheel as usual. "Alright, so we're gonna go have a little chat with this guy - which, you know...I'm down." I say as Sam just sits quietly next to me, staring out the front windshield. "But I just want to make sure, if push comes, you're gonna shove." I add as Sam looks over at me.

"Meaning?" He asks. "Well, odds are we're gonna have to burn this guy alive." I say. "This guy has a name and a wife." Sam says sternly. "Yeah, who we're probably gonna make a widow, okay? I mean, you heard Travis. He's gonna turn. They always turn." I say.

"Well, maybe he won't. Maybe he can fight it off." Sam suggests. "And maybe he can't, that's all I'm saying." I say. "Alright, we'll just have to see then, okay?" Sam grumbles as I look over at him.
