Is it me or does the Christmas sermon feel longer every year? I feel I have been sitting in this pew for hours, but I am so glad it's over and we can go home I'm starving. Getting back in the car heading home, I check the time on my new Rolex watch Dad got me for a present and see it's one in the afternoon. I wonder what Savannah and her dad are doing for Christmas. I want to text her to see how her day is, but I don't want to disturb this day with her and her dad.
We pull into the driveway to see another car parked outside. I don't recognize it but surely it couldn't be. Could it?
When getting out of the car my mind is going crazy in thought. Jen walks round to me and meets me at the trunk of the car, the both of us looking at the car in front of us.
"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" she asks me, I look at her and shrug my shoulders just as the car doors open.
A familiar set of legs step out of the car and I hold my breath. I know them legs anywhere, I have fantasized about them legs for months. Still holding my breath, I see the golden blonde hair come out of the car and it's not until I see them beautiful emerald green eyes look at me is when I start breathing again. Now she is out of the car I take her in and holy fuck, Savannah is breathtaking.
Savannah is wearing a knee-length red and green plaid skirt with a red sweater and a gold glittery belt tied around her waist and pearl-studded black ankle boots. Her hair has what looks like beach waves shaping around her face. Her makeup is simple you can tell she is a natural beauty. As she gets closer to us it's then that I realize she is wearing the earrings I got her for Christmas. I can't wipe the smile off my face seeing her.
"Hey Jen," Savannah says as she gets to us and hugs my sister first before she hugs me. "Hey there all-star."
"Hey there sweetheart," I wrap my arms around her and hold her against me and I kiss her forehead. "What are you doing here? Don't get me wrong I'm so happy to see you but I thought it was just you and your dad today?"
"I invited them," Mom says from behind us as our fathers greet each other with a handshake.
"Mom? You did this?" Jen asks her.
"Of course I did. I wouldn't be able to live with myself knowing that they would be in that house alone and we have so much food for today, so I thought why not invite them and share this day of celebration with our now extended family. And with you three going off to college next year your father and I couldn't have Maxwell celebrate Christmas alone." That's my mom for you. The most caring woman I could ever know.
"But Mom there will be a good chance that we would be home for the holidays when we go off to college. I would miss you too much if I was away for so long and never see you. And Chase here," Jen points in my direction "Wouldn't know how to do his own laundry. He will be ringing you every other day most likely."
"Hey, I take offense to that!" Surely, I'm not that bad. Am I?
"Good, so you should." Jen and I start bickering a little over her comment.
"That is enough you two." Mom bellows at us and we instantly stop. "Consider this my present to all three of you kids. Savannah dear, thank you and your father for joining us today, this will be the best Christmas this family will celebrate in a very long time."
Dad and Savannah's dad comes over and joins us. Dad walks over and puts his hand out for Mom to graciously take it and she does and walks to stand by the two men. "Right, shall we head on inside now?" Dad asks we all look at each other and nod in agreement.
The parents turn and head towards the house, Jen and Savannah head in together talking about something I don't know. While I just stand back and observe my sister and my girl head into my house together. They are laughing and having a good time and the day has only just begun. Savannah turns around and looks at me and she sees I'm still standing in place from when everyone went inside, and she just smiles at me. I can feel it in my chest that I know my life will never be complete unless she is in it. She turns back around and heads inside the house with Jen.
I'm still standing outside as everyone disappears inside and I just think to myself, I am one lucky son of a bitch. I have the greatest parents any person could ever ask for, a fantastic job that I love and will one day take it higher than it is now, and a sister who still annoys me daily, but I would never be without her as she is my other half, and I would never change that for anything, and lastly, I have Savannah, in the short time she has been here she has literally turned my world upside down for the better. She has changed me to be a better businessman, a better student in school, a better football player, and making me think about my future. Holding the chain, she bought me for Christmas makes me think, I love her so deeply it makes me think and plan something for the future and it will be where it all started.
Sitting down at the dinner table Savannah is sat across from me next to her father, Jen is to my left, Dad is at the head of the table and Mom is at the other end. In the center of the table is what looks like a feast fit for the King of England. There is turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, honey-glazed ham, beef tenderloin, a rack of lamb, creamed spinach, green bean casserole, and a bowl of mixed vegetables.
Mom says grace and we tuck into our huge feast. Mom was not joking when she said that we had plenty of food and it was a great idea of her to invite Savannah and her father to join us for dinner. Piling my plate up high I enjoy a good Christmas dinner just like any other American. Some may say that they prefer Thanksgiving over Christmas, but I swear they are lying. I have to keep my calories up as football is getting harder in training, so I need to keep up my strength and power. With how full my plate is I will be burning half of these calories off on my morning run and in the gym tomorrow.
"Mom thank you for all the hard work you have put into this meal, this has got to be one of if not the best Christmas dinner you have ever made," I say to her around a mouthful of potatoes and green bean casserole.
"Thank you, son," Mom says after she takes a sip of her red wine, "I must agree with you that this is one of the best we have had but I cannot take all the credit for this dinner."
"You can't? What do you mean my dear?" My dad asks after he too sips his red wine.
"Well, darling your incredible daughter helped me cook and prepare this dinner. She deserves as much thanks as I do." Me and Dad turn to look at Jen in total shock and she's sat there smiling and her cheeks are beet red, I don't know if that's out of embarrassment or from the praise she so rightly deserves.
