Once we get far enough away from what just happened, I am standing outside the locker room. I turn Savannah around to look at me as I hold onto her shoulders. "Savannah I am so sorry you witnessed that and I'm sorry for how he spoke to you. You deserve so much more than what he said, and I promise you right now he will never come anywhere near you if it's the last thing I do."
"Chase whatever happened back there was not your fault. He provoked you and you done what any guy would do. You defended me and I want to say thank you for that." She holds onto my forearms to comfort me and calm me down. "I will be in the stands with your folks and Jen and if you wanna talk after the game about what happened then I'm here to listen." For the second time in so many minutes, Savannah kisses my cheek and walks to find my family.
I head on into the locker room, to my locker, and start gearing up for the game. Just as I finished lacing up my boots coach comes charging into the locker room to give us our pregame inspirational talk.
"Alright men fall in I want to talk to you before we head out onto the field." We all gather round him so he can tell us what he needs to. "I have been informed there was an altercation not so long ago between one of our opponents and one of our own. I don't care what happened or what occurred. The thing I care about is the fact that it got physical, and I do not allow any of my players doing anything stupid that could jeopardize their chances of getting scholarships. As I have been informed there will be college scouts at tonight's game to see four of you, so I expect the best game you men have ever played in your high school career."
I raise my hand to ask, "Do you know who they are here to see coach?"
"I do and if I tell you do I expect a clean game from all of you?" He points his clipboard around the locker room at all of us. And we all shout in unison.
"YES, COACH!"
"That's what I like to hear." He looks at his clipboard at the names of the guys who the scouts are here to see. "They are here scouting Lucas Sanders, Lewis Cardiff, Graham Monroe, and you Lockwood."
Holy fucking shit! I have scouts here to watch me! Now I must get my aggression out on the field and not on Vance Langston. I must play my best game to date not just to prove something to them scouts, but to prove something to myself.
