We walk under the arch and enter the park and I hear all the sounds of a carnival and all the fun and laughter the guests are having. "What attraction would you like to go on first?" Chase asks me.
"I don't know, what would you recommend?"
"We could play some games first if you want before we go on some of the rides." That doesn't sound like a bad idea.
"Okay but I'm warning you I can be quite competitive so prepare to lose," I inform him before heading off to one of my favorite carnival games. Ring toss. "How good is your aim all-star?" I'm laying down the challenge.
We step up to the stall and Chase turns and looks at me, "It's pretty good sweetheart. Shall we make things a little interesting?"
"Let's make a bet then."
"Great. Okay, the bet is whoever can hook the most rings from the one bucket wins." Oh, like that is it, well big boy challenge accepted.
"Okay if I win you have you tell me what the other part of the date is."
"And when I win?"
"Winner's choice."
"You're on sweetheart." Bring it on.
Chase pays for two buckets and when they are placed in front of us the game begins.
"Birthday girl first," Chase says to me wanting me to go first. Oh, okay I see what game he's playing, and I'll play it just this once. I can't wait to see the look on his face when he loses.
"You asked for it," I pick up a ring and take aim. It flies through the air, and it hits the bottle I was aiming for, bounced off it, and hooked on the bottle two rows behind it. Oh, that was so lucky.
"Lucky shot there sweetheart." Can't argue with him there, that was lucky.
"Your turn Mr. All-Star."
"Mr. All-Star, is that my new nickname?" Is it? It suits him, especially on this one occasion.
"If that's what you want to call me sweetheart I won't object. But if you are, drop the Mr. that sounds too formal," He winks at me, and without aiming he throws his ring, and the ring hooks over a bottle.
"Cocky bastard," I say to him with his eyes never leaving mine. Watching his throw there's one thought I can think of. This might be close if he's this good I better be on my A game.
"That is why you call me all-star sweetheart. I believe it's now your throw." I am sticking with my earlier statement. He is being a cocky bastard, game on big boy, game on. "And just remember whoever rings the most bottles wins and you know what's at stake."
"Oh, trust me I know, and I aim to win." I make my next throw and I miss. Dammit.
Chase winces "Unlucky sweetheart," He takes aim and makes his next throw, and makes another ringer. Motherfucker. "That's why you call me all-star baby."
Right, that's it no more miss nice girl. I thought I was taking it easy on him but now he's being a showoff. I make my next throw and hook a bottle easily. About time I think and then it's Chase's throw and again he hooks a bottle. We continue this back and forth until we are down to the last ring. We are at an even score this game cannot end in a tie. I don't know what we will do if it's a tie. I make my last throw and I miss. Fuck now I wait on his throw holding my breath. Closing my eyes I can't watch as Chase makes his final throw.
I hear a clunk of the ring hitting the bottle and I slowly open my right eye to see if it missed or hooked.
"I guess I win sweetheart," Fuck I don't believe it I open my eyes, look at the ring and see it has indeed hooked a bottle. I turn to look at Chase "It was close Savannah, it could have gone either way," Chase claims, he picks his winning prize a huge white teddy bear with a big red bow tied around its neck, holding a heart that says I love you.
"Aww that's such a cute teddy bear I wonder where you are gonna put that in your room." I tease him giggling softly to myself. He joins in with the laughter and he passes the bear to me.
"I won him for you sweetheart, just like any other prize I win on the carnival games will be for you," He leans down and places a soft kiss on my cheek. Be still my beating heart. I seem to be saying that a lot lately haven't I? It must be true love from what I remember my mom saying.
Chase takes hold of my hand as I struggle to hold onto the bear. He leads me to a locker area "Let's put this in a locker here until it's time to leave that way we won't be struggling carrying him all day and he won't be in our way."
"That's a really good idea, let's do it." We arrange a locker and put the giant teddy in there before we carried on with our date. "Where should we go now?"
"I'm up for something thrilling, shall we hit the rollercoaster?"
"I'm up for it, yeah lead the way." We head towards the line for the rollercoaster. As we approached it Chase stopped walking and was looking straight ahead. Following in the direction he is looking I catch what he sees. "Did you know she would be here?"
Chase turns me to face him and takes hold of my shoulders as if he has a fear I would run from him. "Savannah, I promise you I had no idea Candace would be here. I planned this date the whole day with you and only you in mind. It has got to be a coincidence she's here. Do you believe me?" How could I not believe him so far today has been exactly what he has said. It has been planned with me in mind.
