I sighed and turned to the side, my eyes slowly opening as I stared at Travis’s back. He was sitting at the edge of the bed, his head in his hands, looking like he was lost in thought.
I slowly sat up, watching him carefully. He hadn’t budged, still deeply immersed in whatever was occupying his mind.
Glancing at the clock, my eyes widened in shock. It was already past 8 a.m. “Shit!” I cursed under my breath, quickly getting out of bed. Travis glanced back at me when he heard me.
I slipped on my footwear, trying to act as normal as possible despite the time crunch. “Do you need coffee?” I asked, figuring I should offer. He sucked in a breath, nodding as he stood up.
“I was heading down too,” he replied, heading toward the door. I followed him closely, his steps quick, like he had something on his mind. He pushed the door open, and we stepped out into the hallway.
As soon as we entered, my gaze shot to the wall. “Oh my gosh!” I gasped, feeling a knot form in my stomach. He turned to look and followed my eyes.
There, hanging in the hallway, was a huge framed picture from our wedding.
“What has she done?” Travis muttered under his breath, already heading down the stairs.
I stood there for a moment, unable to tear my eyes away from the photo. It was a good shot, probably the first time I was seeing any wedding pictures. We never really talked about them.
Still processing, I followed Travis down the stairs, where Mrs. Ferrari was giving orders to some workers who were moving furnitures around.
“What’s going on?” he asked, his confusion clear.
“You both are up. You must have been really tired to sleep in this late,” she said, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
The house had been transformed. There were paintings on the walls, sculptures on either side of the stairs, and the once plain table had been swapped for a wider glass one with a log underneath it.
Flowers of every kind decorated the rooms, making everything feel... beautiful.
“What are you doing, Mother?” Travis asked, his tone a mix of annoyance and surprise.
“Something you both were too lazy to do,” she replied with a proud smile, surveying the place like she had single-handedly turned it into a home. “Look at how much it looks like a home now.”
I glanced around, taking it all in. It did look better, more inviting. But the timing of it all still felt off.
“Don’t you think you should have gotten through with me first?” Travis asked, his irritation creeping back. “Your wife permitted?”
Before he could turn to me, I walked over to her side. “It’s all beautiful, Rosa,” I said, offering her a smile, trying to keep the peace.
“Thank you,” she said, clearly pleased. “I was thinking of adding more of—” She began to ramble about her ideas, and I smiled in amusement.
Meanwhile, Travis was already heading toward the kitchen, escaping from the whirlwind of her enthusiasm.
“I’ll be going to the office, Rosa,” Travis announced, clearly ready to get out. “I really don’t want to leave you—”
“Go,” she interrupted with a dismissive wave. “I have plans for today.”
I shot her a quick look of surprise, and she met my gaze with a smirk. “You think I came all the way here to see my snobby son?” she asked, and I couldn’t help but chuckle at the understatement.
