101 - First day of high school

You were already late, even though you left for school early. You had no idea where you were going because you had never been to the high school before. Your schedule was supposed to tell you everything you needed to know, except for where everything was located.

Finally after at least 10 minutes of wandering around, you found your locker. Your schedule had the combination on it. You kept putting in the numbers, but it wouldn't budge.

"Need some help?"

You turn and see a tall blonde boy leaning against the lockers.

"Yeah," you say, handing him your schedule.

He looks at the combination written on your schedule, puts the numbers into the lock, and your locker opens perfectly.

"How did you do that?" You ask.

"I'm basically the locker whisperer," he says, grinning at you.

"No, but seriously."

"You turn it right to the first number, then left to the next, then right again to the last one," he says.

"Thanks. Do you happen to know where my first class is, by any chance?"

He looks down at your schedule again.

"Yeah, you have first period with me," he says.

He hands your schedule back.

"I can show you where it is. Also, my locker is the one next to yours so if you need help again, you know where to find me," he says, leading you to your first period class.

You follow him down the hall to your first period. He leads you into a classroom and you both sit beside each other in the back.

"Are you nervous for the first day of high school?" Riker asks.

"Yeah. Isn't everyone?" You ask.

"No. I'm not. The first day is the easiest day of the school year. You don't learn anything. There's no tests. And there's no homework. And if you're late to class, you won't get in trouble because nobody knows where they're going," he says.

"That's true, I guess."

"Can I see your schedule again?"

You hand him your schedule. He takes out his too.

"We have literally every class together. So just stick with me and you'll be fine. We can even sit together at lunch."

"Really?"

"Yeah. Today will be easy. I promise."

"Thanks."

"No problem."

"What's your name?"

"Riker," he says, giving you a smile.

Later...

Riker helped you find every class. You even sat with him and his friends at lunch. It was definitely the best first day of school you had ever had.

You stopped by your locker one more time before you went home for the day and managed to get it open.

"Taking the bus or walking?" Riker asks, appearing beside you.

"Walking. I live like 5 minutes from here," you say.

"Cool. Can I walk you home?"

"Sure."

You finish swapping out the books in your locker and Riker does the same. And then you both walk out of the school together.

"So..." Riker says.

"So...?" You ask.

"Do you think maybe you'd want to like... hang out sometime?" He asks, sounding nervous for the first time today.

"Yeah, definitely," you say.

Riker smiles instantly. You both get to your house and you pause on the porch.

"Thanks for walking me home," you say.

"No problem. Do you think maybe I could get your number? You know, in case you need help opening your locker again?"

You laugh and swap phones with Riker.

"See you tomorrow?" Riker asks, handing your phone back.

"We can meet at my locker," you say, smiling.
