29 - Riker contacts you years after a fight

It was a normal day. You were sitting on your bed doing some homework when your phone makes a noise. You pick it up and look at it. You have a new message on Instagram.

You unlock your phone, and go on Instagram. Sure enough, you have a new message. And it's from a certain someone you haven't spoken to in a few years.

You debate in your head whether you want to click on it or not. And you remember how this all started.

Flashback

"Don't even worry about me! You can spend all your time with that new boy!" Riker shouted.

"Riker, I didn't tell you because I knew you'd be jealous of him! He's just a friend!"

"Well then I guess it's justified if I didn't tell you that I was moving to California!"

"Riker, that's completely different!"

"No, it's not! We both kept secrets from each other. And you obviously won't miss me. You'll be too busy spending time with him."

"Riker, you know I don't like him like that."

"Well then why were you constantly spending time with him!? Didn't you know how I felt!? It hurt! A lot!"

"Riker, maybe if you'd just told me how you were feeling, we could've talked about it."

"No! You used to spend hours talking and texting with me. And now you barely give me the time of day. It's obvious who you like better."

"Riker-"

"No! I can't be with you! It hurts too much if you're just going to act like this! Act like you love him more."

"You're being so immature about this! Why can't you understand that I only like him as a friend!?"

"Because I don't believe you!"

"Fine! Then I guess it's a good thing you're going to California. If I bother you that much, then I'm glad you're going."

"Fine. Have a good life."

"Yeah, you too."

End of flashback

You guys hadn't ended things on good terms. Riker was mad at you for spending so much time with a friend you knew from school. Since Riker was homeschooled, he didn't really get it. He didn't have many other friends. He only knew you since you were neighbors.

And you were mad at Riker for not telling you he was moving. He waited until the week before he was supposed to leave.

You and him had been dating for a few months, but after everything, you both just sort of forgot about each others' existences.

Until today.

You look down at your phone again. Do you click on his message or not?

You were honestly torn. You haven't spoken to him in years. Everything was different. You were in college now. And you knew he was in a band, trying to become famous.

So why was he contacting you?

He didn't even follow you on Instagram.

You were honestly very confused.

Your curiosity got the better of you, and you opened the message.

Hey,

I know we haven't spoken in forever. And I get it if you don't ever want to talk to me again. But I've been thinking about you. I wish things hadn't ended the way they'd ended. And I'm sorry for the things I said back then.

I was just wondering if maybe we could talk. Maybe fix things. I get it if you don't want to. But I figured I'd ask.

The truth is, I miss you. And I miss how things used to be.

Let me know if you want to talk.

Riker

You sigh, and stare at the message.

It hurt when he left. You guys refused to talk to each other, and it hurt.

You used to love him, and he used to love you.

He'd come over your house almost every day, and you'd hang out for hours, talking about the randomest things. Before the fight, he made every day amazing.

Everyone deserves a second chance. And you want to give Riker his.

So you type a reply.

Riker,

I'd be up to talking. I'd prefer if we could videochat or something instead of texting though.

I miss you too.

You hit send.

Literally within seconds, you get a reply.

I'm actually flying back to my old house tomorrow if you still live around there. If you're not busy, we could talk face to face tomorrow, maybe around 5:00?

You feel a bit anxious about this, but you want to do it.

Sure. We can meet at my old house. I still live there.

You hit send, and wait for a reply.

Ok. Be there at 5:00.

You sigh, and shut off your phone. But you're a little excited. You missed Riker. You missed his goofiness, and the way he could always make you laugh.

You just hope tomorrow goes well. You don't want to fight with him anymore.

The next day...

You're nervous but also excited to see Riker again. You're a little scared that he changed since you last saw him. But you break out of your thoughts when you hear the doorbell.

You jump up, and run to the door. You open it, and immediately get pulled into a very tight hug by Riker.

"I missed you so much," he mumbles, holding onto you tighter.

You finally break apart, and lead him up to your bedroom so you can talk. He sits down on your bed, and looks around your bedroom.

"Looks almost the same as it did a few years ago," Riker says.

You nod, and sit on the other end of the bed.

"So..." Riker says, awkwardly.

You look up at him, giving him all your attention.

"Look... I'm sorry for how things ended. But we've both had some time away from each other to think and cool down. We both did things to hurt each other. Maybe we can just put that in the past and move on?" He says.

He looks extremely nervous, but that's exactly how he was when he was younger. Whenever he'd do something wrong or make you mad, he'd get very nervous until you forgave him. He was afraid of losing you. And it seems like that's still the case.

"Alright. I'm cool with that," you say.

Riker smiles, and pulls you into another tight hug. You can hear his heart beating quickly. But it slows down.

"Seriously. I really am sorry. Things should've never ended that way. I was so worried our friendship would be ruined forever," Riker says, as you guys pull away.

"Well... True friends always seem to have a way of coming back to each other, don't they?"

"Yeah. They do," he says, smiling.
