Shiva's POV:
I went to kitchen in search of ma. She was chopping vegetables there.
"Hi shiva, do you need something?" she asked me while chopping.
"Nothing ma, I just came to tell you that we are not inviting my mother for the baby shower." she stopped chopping and set it aside.
"Shiva, I know that you are angry on your mother for whatever happened but are you sure you don't want to invite her to the baby shower? This is an important milestone in your life. This is her grandchild as well, the baby needs her blessings too."
"That is exactly why I don't want to invite her. I still need time to trust her. Until I am sure that she has only good intentions towards Tanu and our baby. I will keep her away from them."
"What will the people say when they see that you mother is not present."
"We will tell them that it is a tradition in my side that mother in law cannot be there for the baby shower." she laughed at my words.
"We can try with that."
"I have asked Kishore to bring all the items you asked me for. Tomorrow we will be going for doctor's appointment and while coming back we will bring the outfits from boutique. Is there anything else?"
"It is all set then. Do you need any alterations for your Kurta?"
"No ma, it fits properly."
"Good. Lunch will be ready in half an hour. Where is Tanvi?"
"She is in the room. I asked her to take rest." she nodded in response.
On the day of baby shower:
We had organized the baby shower in a nearby conventional hall. Guests started coming in. I was little nervous. I don't want anyone to make ill comments about Tanvi or the baby.
Tanvi was still getting ready. I was welcoming the guests like a good host would do. I learnt recently on how to do small talk with relatives from papa. I must say that it is very different from how we do at business parties and a lot more interesting. It was time to put all my learnings into action.
When it was time to begin the baby shower, I went to the room to bring Tanu. Her back was facing me and she was adjusting her Maang Tikka (is a traditional Indian headpiece worn by women, often on the hairline or hair parting, with a pendant that dangles over the center of the forehead).
"Tanu, are you ready?" She turned towards me hearing my voice.
She looked so ethereal in the Bottle green Kanchi saree, it was a gift from her parents. She was smiling wide facing me, I could feel her happiness looking at her smile. I pray to god in my mind- 'Please give me strength to keep my Tanu this happy always.'
I walk towards her unknowingly, it was as if my legs have a mind of their own. I kiss her forehead.
"You are looking so beautiful Tanu. You never seize to amaze me with your beauty." she blushed at my words.
"Stop it shiva!" she hid her face in my neck.
"You smell so good." she says faintly.
"You can smell me all you want after the ceremony. Let's go now, everyone are waiting for you."
"Sure let's go. This Kurta looks so good on you."
"It should look good, my wife embroidered it for me."
"I am glad it turned out this good." we talked as we made our way to the stage.
The ceremony began.
Ma and papa came first on the stage and gifted a necklace for Tanu and a neck chain for me. My dad brought some gold ornaments for Tanu and a cradle for the baby. People came on stage to give gifts and click photos.
It was all good until one nosy aunty asked Tanu about my mother.
"Where is your mother in law Tanu?"
"She is not supposed to come aunty. It is a custom in our side." I stepped in before anyone else could speak.
"That is weird, I haven't heard of such customs. Is it because she opposed your wedding and still doesn't like you?"
"India is a very diverse country with diverse customs and traditions. So there is higher chance of you not knowing about a custom, it is alright. Thanks for your concern about our family, but there is nothing for you to worry about." I looked her straight in the eye and told in a no nonsense tone. I hope she got the message.
She smiled tightly after listening to me and left after clicking photos. Tanu held my hand after that.
I was amazed to find out that so many people were nosy about our marriage and married life. I felt a weird satisfaction after shutting them up. Sometimes Tanu would be on the verge of a cackle while I was trying to shut them up with an answer.
When we reached home in the evening, we were all tired. I was giving massage to Tanu's feet with oil.
"Thanks Shiva, for shutting the mouths of the nosy relatives."
"It is my duty Tanu. don't thank me for doing something that I am supposed to do. How are you feeling?"
"Awesome. To be honest, today was perfect and I feel like everything has fallen in its place. This is what I always wanted from the beginning. I am happy with everything you are doing for me, I cannot wait for our baby to come to this world."
"I need to thank you for giving me another chance. I cannot imagine my world without you and our baby in it. I am sorry for realizing it late. I too can't wait for the baby to come and add on to the happiness."
"Better late than never, shiva. All thanks to our baby. We have evolved so much from everything that happened. I am grateful for that as well. It gave me a new perspective to life and love. And it is another chance to redefine our boundaries and change the dynamics of our relationship. With the way we were before I don't think we would have survived. We didn't prioritize our relationship, I was ok with whatever you gave me. It was not healthy. But what matters is we are here today still loving each other, more than we did before, showing up for each other and not giving up on our relationship. I wanted to discuss with you the names for our baby."
"Oh yes, the names. Have you thought of any?"
"Actually yes, I came across this beautiful character in a book that I recently read and the name of the character was Avyukt." She said smiling sheepishly.
"Will I ever be able to compete with your fictional men?" I ask pouting.
"I am afraid not. But you don't have to worry about them, my heart always belongs to you." She leans forward to kiss my cheek but I turns my head and we end up kissing.
After recovering from our little makeout, we cuddled each other and slept.
I woke up when Tanvi turned on the light to use the washroom in midnight. She paused halfway to the bathroom.
"What happened Tanu?" I got up from the bed walked towards her. I saw water near her leg and her wet pajamas. Her face was panic stricken. But why? She just peed right?
"Its ok Tanu, I will clean it. Why are you panicking? It is just pee."
She gave me a "Are you for real" look.
Wait! Am I missing something? Think Shiva think.
"My water broke you dumb ass!!" She screeched.
