Shiva's POV:
I wanted to tell Tanu about it but I didn't want to stress her. Given the history, my mother is a sensitive topic to her and I don't want to bring her up during the time of her healing. But then again, I don't want to go and meet her behind Tanu's back. I went to ask ma about it. She was cutting vegetables.
"Hi ma. I wanted to talk to you about something."
"Tell me Shiva. Why are you being so formal."
"My mother has called me to meet her. Dad told that she is leaving to Europe and she wants to meet me once before she leaves."
"What do you mean by leaving? Is she going on a vacation?"
"She will no longer stay here I guess. I don't know the exact reason. I will ask her if I meet her."
"When are you going to meet her?"
"I have not replied to her yet. I want to ask Tanu first."
"But why Shiva? She is your mother."
"Tanu is still in her postpartum recovery. I don't want to stress her. I don't want her to overthink about my meeting with my mom. I don't know how to approach her or ask her about this."
"Shiva, I understand where you are coming from, but Tanu is not that weak. You remember the time when you met your mom accidentally, I talked to her after it and asked her how she felt. Do you know what she told me?" I shrugged. She continued.
"She said she cannot control your actions but she can control her reaction to it. She is more stronger than you think. I think you should go ahead and talk to her about this."
"Thanks ma."
"You are welcome Shiva"
That night I brought this topic up.
"Tanu I wanted to talk to you about something." She was pumping milk.
"My mom wants to meet me." I came directly to the topic.
"Why are you asking me this Shiva? You can go and meet her"
"Are you ok with it?"
"Why wouldn't I? She is your mother."
"I know but wouldn't it stress you?"
"What good will that be? Stressing won't change anything. You are her son, she will always be connected with you. In the heat of the moment you might have said that you cut ties with her. But tomorrow if she falls sick or needs help, you should be there for her as her son. That is your responsibility. I cannot stop you. However I still need time to be with her presence. You can go and meet her as long as you don't expect me to be present along with you."
Ma was right. She deserves more credit that I give her for.
"Thanks Tanu. I will ask her to come somewhere near by. I don't want to leave you both and go to Bangalore."
"Ok Shiva. Can you keep these bottles in the fridge and come?"
"Sure babygirl." I winked at her and went downstairs.
Next day
I had asked mom to come to a nearby cafe. I went to meet her around 11 am.
She was already waiting for me when I reached there.
She looked much better than the last time I had seen her. Dressed in a cotton saree, pearl studs, mangalsutra and 2 gold bangles. She looked nothing like the Varsha Goenka I knew growing up. My throat clogged. Not the time to get emotional Shiva. You are here to talk. My mind chimed.
