Shiva's POV:
I looked at doctor when they announced the time of birth.
"Congratulations Shiva and Tanu. It is a baby boy." My eyes met with Tanu's, I kissed her forehead. Tears were streaming down our face. This was such a divine moment for us. Meeting the child we created with our love for each other. The child whom Tanu had nourished in her womb for all these months. The child who made me a father. I can feel the instinct building inside me to protect him from all the dangers of this world, to help him navigate this world, to teach him good from bad, to support him through all the milestones of his life, to leave him a legacy and most importantly to make sure he never does the same mistakes as mine.
"Would you like to cut the umbilical chord?" the doctor asks me holding the baby.
I asked myself 'do I want to do this?' The answer came instantly, 'Hell yes'
I nodded at her and walked forward after giving Tanu's hand a squeeze.
I cut the cord and doctor started to clean the baby and then suddenly flicked the baby's feet. I growled at her. The nurse next to me explained that it is necessary to make the baby cry. I calmed down after that.
Then they took the baby to Tanu for skin contact. As soon as he was placed on her he stopped wailing. It was as if he recognised her right away. I wanted to capture the look on Tanu's face so badly. She looked so content. I fell for her all over again.
After Tanu, they did skin contact with me too before they took the baby away to do some tests.
Tanu slept off after they took away the baby, I stayed with her till the end of surgery.
After coming out, I informed ma and papa. They had tears of joy.
I informed my dad about the news. He started for the hospital right away.
I called kishor and told him to gift sweet boxes to all the employees.
Ma and papa had not informed any of the relatives, so it was just us in the hospital. Papa went home and brought Isha. The baby was kept in NICU to monitor him for a day. We took turns to look at him and come.
By afternoon, Tanu regained consciousness. The nurse asked her some questions and left.
"Hi Tanu, how are feeling?" Ma asked her.
"Baby... where is my haby?" She started looking around.
"He is perfectly alright. He is in NICU." I informed her.
"I want to see him"
"I will inform the nurse." I went out and asked the nurse.
When the nurse handed the sleeping baby to Tanu, she started cooing to him. He smiled in his sleep. She cuddled him.
Dad clicked our photos. The nurse clicked a family photo on our request.
When the lactation consultant came, everyone went out leaving Tanu, baby and me.
Our little boy was having difficulty latching. The consultant told that it was normal and with time he will learn. She taught about pumping and storing the milk and also burping the baby after feeding.
After Tanu fed him, the consultant asked me to burp him. It was so scary. Tanu was laughing looking at me. I successfully burped him after a couple of minutes.
This moment was so special to me. This was the first time we are doing something together as parents alongside our baby.
After the consultant left. The doctor informed that the baby will be monitored in NICU for another 12 hours and after that he will be in this room alongside Tanu.
The nurse took the baby back and Tanu slept. I went out to the corridor. Dad was talking with pappa.
"Shiva, I will leave now. I have a meeting at 3 PM. Kishore will stay here with you."
"Ok dad. I will walk you down to parking."
Dad spoke as we entered the elevator,
"Shiva, I wanted to tell you something about your mother."
"Is she alright?" I asked him with concern.
"She is alright. She is moving to Europe."
"What!!! Europe??" I asked in disbelief.
"Yes. It is not my place to tell. She is leaving next month. Before leaving she might come and meet you. I just wanted to give you a heads up."
"But why suddenly?"
"I went with her for therapy. It was long overdue. We discussed some stuff with the therapist. You will know when she comes to meet you. I am not urging you to talk to her. Don't think much about it. Focus on Tanu and the baby right now. Take care Shiva. Let me know if you need anything."
While I walked back to Tanu's room, all I could think was why mom was leaving India. Why now? Is this another stunt of hers to pull me away from Tanu? I can't make sense of it. Like dad said, it is better to wait till she asks me to meet her. I should not arrive into any conclusions before talking to her.
I went along with Kishore to get all the necessary supplies for Tanu and baby.
On the second night, the baby was very restless and he kept on wailing. He would calm down, when we picked him up but the moment we placed him in the bassinet he would start again. We didn't a wink of sleep that night.
The nurse told us that it would take some time for the baby to adjust for the outside environment.
On the 3rd day evening, Tanu was discharged.
He would sleep throughout the day and stay awake throughout the whole night. Ma and papa looked after the baby during the day while me and Tanu tried to get some sleep.
The diaper changing duties were mine and I could never get used to the nasty smell while changing it. Tanu used to laugh at my antics which would cause her stomach pain and then she would scold me for making her laugh. I used to apologise to her.
Our new routine was exhausting but it made me feel contented like never before.
I had forgotten about my mom leaving for Europe until she asked me if we could meet.
