Chapter 66

Shiva's POV:

"My water broke you dumb ass" Tanu screeched.

My brain shot circuited listening to her. Water broke!!! There was still a month to her due date. We haven't even packed our hospital bag. What are we supposed to do now?

"Go and wake up ma and papa fast, Shiva" Tanvi sat on a nearby chair. I came out of my reverie and rushed downstairs to wake up ma and papa.

I knocked on their door and waited for it to open. Ma opened it yawning.

"What happened shiva?" She asked rubbing her eyes.

"Ma.. Tanvi.. Tanvi" I stammered.

She widened her eyes, papa also woke up.

"What happened to her?" Papa asked.

"Her water broke."

Ma rushed upstairs hearing my words.

"Call the doctor and let her know. We will take her to the hospital right away. Shiva, this is not the time to panic. You have to be courageous for Tanvi. We are all there with you." papa said patting my shoulders.

His words made me realise that this is not about me. I am not the one giving birth. I can freak out later but now I should man up and take action.

I called doctor while climbing stairs, she picked up the call after 2 rings.

"Hello doctor, this is Shiva Goenka, husband of Tanvi. Tanvi's water broke 10 min ago. Shall I bring her to hospital?" I see tanu sitting on the chair while ma is helping her drink water.

"Oh, her due date is not near right?"

"It is not until another month doctor."

"How is she right now? Can you ask her if her stomach is paining?"

"Tanu is your stomach paining? How are you feeling?" I asked her and held the phone near Tanu.

"I feel light cramps, nothing too painful."

"Bring her to the hospital right away."

"We haven't yet packed the hospital bag. Can you please tell the necessary stuff. I will grab them."

"Get her hospital file and aadhar card. That should be enough for now. I will inform the hospital right away."

"Ok doctor, thank you so much." I rush and grab hospital file and her aadhar card.

I brought another gown for Tanu. Me and ma helped her change into it.

By the time we brought her downstairs, papa was already in the car.

We drove to the hospital. When we reached there, Tanu's doctor had already informed the hospital and they were waiting outside with a wheelchair. They took her in.

While we were waiting outside they were checking on her. After some time a doctor came out.

"Relatives of Tanvi?"

"Her husband." I introduced myself.

"I am the ER doctor. She is fine now. We did a quick ultrasound to check on the baby. The baby looks fine but there is not much amniotic fluid inside. Her cervix is not opened yet. The gynaecologist is on the way. Once she reaches, we will check again and she will take the call."

"This is preterm. Will there be any problem?" I asked

"The baby looks healthy now. Don't worry. She will be in the ER ward till the gynaecologist decides how to proceed. You can go and meet her now." The ER doctor was called for another case.

We entered the ward and looked for Tanu. They had attached wires to her stomach and her hands.

"This is to monitor baby's and mine heartbeat." Tanu said.

"How are you feeling Tanu?" I sat down on the side of her bed. Ma was brushing her hairs from her face while papa was standing on the other side.

"Scared?" Tanu said her eyes glistening with tears. I held her hands and began kissing them.

"Tanu ma, you are my strongest baby. You can do this. We are all there with you. Nothing will happen to you or the baby." Ma spoke. I was trying to control my tears so badly.

The gynaecologist arrived and asked ma and papa to stay outside.

She did ultrasound and checked her dilation.

"Tanu, your cervix has not opened yet. We can wait till it opens but you have lost a lot of amniotic fluid. It is not safe for the child. I would suggest we perform
Cesarean and remove the baby."

I looked at Tanu for an answer.

"I don't want you to risk our child's safety. Doctor please do the operation." Her eyes were flowing with tears. Seeing her crying I also started crying like a baby.

The doctor looked at me and said, "you can go to the reception and do her admission. They will provide you with a consent form for c section, please sign that. I will get the OT ready." She left.

I called ma and papa inside and repeated whatever the doctor said.

"Tanu, you took the right call." Ma agreed with her. But papa's eyes filled with tears.

I went to the reception and did the admission. When the nurse brought me the consent form, my hands were shaking. Tears dropped from my eyes and fell on the paper.

"Sir, this is just a formality. You don't have to worry so much." The nurse tried to reassure me.

I nodded at her and signed the paper.

By the time I came back to the ward, they told me that they were getting Tanu ready for the surgery. I told them that I wanted to be there as well.

The nurse helped me wear the gown and disinfect my hands.

Ma and papa kissed her forehead before they took her in.

"Prakash, please stop crying. Nothing will happen to our Tanu. She will be out before you know it."

"She is still my little baby. I know that the chances of complications are less, yet that parent instinct in me is restless."

He looked towards me and came forward.

"Shiva, please stay with my babygirl."

"Sure papa. I will stay with her throughout the surgery."

I went in praying to god in my heart.

I felt my stomach churn at the sight of OT.

Tanu was lying on the operation table. The doctors and nurses were talking in some medical terms. I could pick from their conversation that anaesthesia was administered to her.

"Hi Tanu how are you feeling?"

"Scared and excited. I was not prepared to welcome our baby this early. I still can't believe all of this is happening. We didn't even pack my hospital bag."

"I am here with you. As long as you and our baby are alright, we can deal with anything else. Think on the brighter side, now we have a great birth story to tell our baby."

She laughs at my words. We continue to talk until the doctor starts the surgery. I keep looking at Tanu's face.

"Time of birth 4:23 a.m." the doctor declares.
