"She's stabilized, but I would give her at least a week before you take her home," one of the many doctors assured Tony and Pepper, as (y/n)'s bruised body lay prone in a hospital bed, "she has a concussion and quite a few bruised ribs, but she should be fine. She seems like she's quite the fighter. You are very lucky she's good at her job, yes?"
"Lucky or stupid," Tony reiterated, grabbing (y/n) hand and squeezing it, before letting go, "I have an appointment at the prison, I need to know what this guy wants and why he tried to kill me."
Fear for her clawed at his stomach, but he covered it with unabashed anger. For a brief second, he was left astonished, and warm, from her protection, and it rippled over his body, as he watched her stand up to his new enemy.
Her determination was written all over her face, clenched teeth, and damned near glowing eyes, once her flawless agility took that asshole to the ground a hell of alot faster than he did, but she had no business jumping into the fray, even if she did help take Vanko down in the end.
She was a fighter, he always knew that, but he'd never been more scared in his life when the man in question, Vanko, nearly electrocuted her, then picked her up like a rag doll, and tossed her against the wall. He could of sworn he felt her pain in his own body as she whimpered, and slid down the concrete wall, only to try and get up to finish the fight.
The rage in his body went untethered for a few seconds, as she finally collapsed and he took over.
This was his fault, all of it. His own nonchalance, and need to act irrationally due to his own fear, could of gotten her killed. All because of his overwhelming need to forget what was slowly killing him, but she had no right to put herself in danger, like some lunatic.
"Thank you doctor," Pepper mumured, and looked down at the laceration on (y/n) scalp, "Tony, this is insane, whoever this man is, he almost killed both of you, leave it alone, we need to prepare to go home," Pepper sniffled, and brushed some hair off of (y/n) face.
"We will, but I need to know why first?" Tony growled with finality, and stomped out the door.
"Natalie?" Pepper called.
"Yes, Ms. Potts?" Natalie answered coming through the door with Happy.
"Can you sit here with her, I want to have the plane ready and I need to answer some questions," Pepper ordered, squeezing (y/n) hand, and getting up from the uncomfortable hospital chair. Her heart seemed to ache in her chest, and the adrenaline she experienced still prickled over her exposed skin.
She'd seen (y/n) work out, stop stalkers, fans, and take down Happy and Tony in the ring, even Stane almost a year ago, but to see her so sure the suspect was after Tony, and move like some kind of ninja, startled her.
(Y/n) took on a man who was twice her size, and succeeded for the most part, but the utter confusion, and shock sent her mind reeling.
She could of lost both (y/n) and Tony, and her high-pitched scream pierced the air once (y/n)'s body hit the wall, and crumpled to the concrete. She was so struck by what she saw, she couldn't move till the emt's arrived, and Tony's loud voice carried over to her.
She could of lost both of them...
"Yes, ma'am," Natalie smiled, bringing her back to present.
"If she wakes up, please call me," Pepper added tiredly, pushing Happy out of the hospital room.
"Tony?" I moaned, and slowly reached up, but pain quickly spread over my body and had me gasping out in shock.
"Hey it's alright," a female voice answered.
I opened my eyes and could make out red hair.
"Hey Red," I tried to snort, but hissed at the pain, "ow, how long have I been out?"
"Take it easy, and you've been unconscious for a few days, now. You have a concussion and some bruised ribs, but besides the pain, how're you feeling?" She asked, finally coming into focus.
"Like shit, is Tony okay, how'd I do?" I asked, trying to sit up, not even bothering to hide my worry about Tony from her, "what happened, who was that guy?" I continued, and struggled to sit up.
"Hey relax, and you did better than Tony did, which may explain why he's been acting like a jerk since you got here," she paused, and cleared her throat, "after you got Vanko to the ground, he let go of Stark and focused on you. Once he threw you against the wall, Tony was finally able to yank out the reactor in his chest. The man's in a prison facility now," she replied and smiled at me.
"Vanko? Thats a nice scary Russian name," I stammered, immediately stopping when a sharp pain radiated over my ribs, "well that's good, I guess. Do you know what he wants and why?"
"No, Stark was allowed to talk to him a few days ago, but he hasn't spoken about what was said," she shrugged, and unbuttoned her brown suit jacket, "you did well out there for someone who doesn't have an extensive training background," she jested, quietly getting up and closing the hospital door, "what're you doing working for Stark? You could be out saving the world with all that potential?"
