I rolled over and squinted as a sharp pain stabbed behind my eyes. For a second I assumed we were still on the boat, since I was still swaying back and forth with dizziness.
"Red?" I mumbled into soft cushions.
"Hey, you're alright, just a bump on the head," Steve's tired voice announced, "but it required a few stitches so be careful."
I opened my eyes and took a deep calming breath, while I looked around Cap's living room.
Steve was still in the tight clothes he wore under his uniform, but his jaw and fists were clenched, and his eyes blazed with anger. I didn't even question why I was in his apartment and on his couch, I spent much of my down time here as I did with Tasha, but the pensive man in front of me made my stomach tense with alarm."What's the matter?" I asked, slightly squinting when he quickly jumped up from his coffee table and nearly stomped to his small window that overlooked the street, "Steve, what happened, where's Tasha, did we get everyone out?" I asked, and tried to get up, but the air in the room was thick with resentment, and made me queasy.
"Do you ever wonder if we're on the right side? If SHIELD's on the right side?" He asked quietly, while his breath lightly fogged up the window.
I opened and closed my eyes at the question, making sure I heard him right, but the alarm in my stomach returned, shaking my body to its core, "uh what...just how long have I been asleep? What the hell happened, you can't still be mad at Tasha for following orders OUR Director gave her, and technically it was probably my fault, something didn't feel right about this particular mission, it still doesn't," I questioned, gingerly getting off his couch, and headed towards him. My headache, and dizziness worsened, as did the pain from the small laceration tucked into my hairline, but I swallowed my nausea, and stood next to him at the window.
"I feel like shit right now, but honestly, I agree with you when it comes to secrets, and I was very adamant Fury tell you about Nat's side mission, but between you and me, I've been questioning things since I found out about the Tesseract, the bomb into Manhattan didn't help either, then how we handled AIM," I admitted, and wrapped my arms around my queasy stomach.
Steve and I had already been asking more questions, once we learned it was the security council who ordered that nuke be sent into the heart of Manhattan during the Loki incident. Fury had almost lost his position because he went against those very orders, and tried to stop the plane, before it left, but the damage had been done.
Then AIM happened, and while we learned Killian and Hansen were a part of Tony and Pepper's past, Killian was responsible for so much death and loss. We should of stepped in sooner, we could have, before I lost my shit and tried to do it on my own.
Plus, our work with the Tesseract had already caused Cap to question the slippery slope SHIELD seemed to be on, but I trusted my team, and that's where my loyalty layed.
"Hey, both Phil and Peggy believed in this organization, although, Tony doesn't put much stock into it, not anymore, strangely, he thinks there's too many secrets, too many agendas," I surmised, and cleared my throat, "the vibe you're giving off is making me edgy, and my headache worse, what's wrong?""Stark may be right, and I don't think it's the same organization Peggy left behind," Steve rebuked, "Fury showed me the future of SHIELD today while you were being checked out by the med team. Did you know about Project Insight?"
"No," I answered honestly, frowning at the melancholoy in his voice, "it's never been mentioned, and I've seen no information on it, why?""Neither had I till earlier this morning, but three helicarriers were built by SHIELD, and they're going to be connected to spy satellites all over the world. Any mention of war, terrorism, or any other causes for concern, will be monitored and taken care of. They don't want another New York, or AIM happening under our noses," he fumed, as my head snapped around and met his blue eyes, "(Y/n), OUR Director also told me I shouldn't trust anyone, I'm assuming that advice included you and Romanoff."
