"The horses are down for the night, and I'm gonna go take a hot bath and drink a beer," I stated, and walked towards Jesse, aching for some food and a hot bath.
"Well deserved I would say," he replied, and showed me the way of dollar bills he won.
Most of the men quickly went back to their chores, once I approached. I couldn't hear their whispers, but they shied away from me once I walked forward. Jesse must of noticed my frown cause he cleared his throat, and tried to smile.
"They're uneasy around you," he stated nonchalantly, adding to the dissipating adrenaline.
"Why?" I scoffed, and stopped at the steps, but he didn't have to answer me. After my outburst a day earlier, and seeing an Avenger flip off a horse, I didn't blame them for their reaction, but it still bothered me.
I began to wonder if everyone was going to look at me that way, or my team.
Nico joined his father, and turned his stare on me, "because of what you can do. You heard the horse's, it happened the other day too, when you ran outside agitated, and nearly broke my neck," he stated, "you've always done it, but it's weirder, and stronger. No one's been able to ride that horse, no one.."
"I don't know what hell you're talking about? And you deserved it, after what you said, and coming at me and Tony like some goddamned jealous housewife," I barked, feeling a crack in the happiness I'd experienced when I got up earlier. I noted it too, but the ability had always been there, and it had grown more these past few years.
"It's nothing hija, you've always been able to talk to the horses," Jesse lamented, but there was more.
"But," I challenged, and immediately ached for Tony's strong presence.
The silence made me uncomfortable, but I turned towards both of them, recognizing the same questions in their eyes, my team started to get after seeing Fury's file on me, was released.
"Your nanita had the same gifts," Jesse sighed, and looked towards the setting sun.
"Wait what?" I hissed, and took a step in his direction, "I mean I knew she was intuitive, and her eyes.. but I never saw her with the horses once I moved in, or.." I added, and followed his brown eyes across the yard.
Her warnings, and words rang true, all of them did, but that didn't mean more than it had too, at the moment.
My mind churned, and my fingers began to tingle with renewed awareness, but I closed my eyes and tried to control my breathing.
Fury alluded to my grandmother as well, in his files, and seemed to somehow acquire loads of information about my family.
"Hija.... I thought you knew this, you said she left you a letter," Jesse asserted, and tipped his hat back.
"She did," I whispered, and plopped down on the ground, "she told me something's coming, and to trust my own strength...but," I started, but left out her musings about goddesses and shadows. As far as I was concerned, those words were meant for me, and my inner circle, which didn't include the people in front of me, at least not anymore.
"Then take heed in her warnings, and words," he warned and looked at Nico, "before your parents died, people would seek out her wisdom, her strength, in times of need. She had a way with horses, and an effect on the people around her. They would come from miles around, just to have nanita work on their animals, or ask her a question about personal things.."
"No..., that's a lie, I would remember," I complained, and looked towards the door of the house, seconds from calling out for Tony.
"Su madre y padre kept you away for a long time, because su madre, she too suffered the same affliction, and your father feared it," Jesse added carefully, while my heart hammered in my chest.
I forced myself to look back, but was unable to remember much of anything before my parents died. There were no memories, only the outline of a dark room, gunshots, and quickly moving in with my grandma and grandpa.
"When they died, su nanita stopped using her gift, afraid it would do to you, what it did to su madre," Jesse explained, and kneeled down in the dirt. He removed the dirty cowboy hat off his grey head, and closed his eyes, while my lungs emptied, and I swallowed the bile rising up my throat. Blind rage shook my body, but like the wind, from a few days earlier, it blew through the yard and through my hair. It smelled like warm honey, and cinnamon, it smelled like my grandmother. Tears burned my eyes, with the information, but my quick rage settled, and I slowly stood up.
