"I didn't know...." Tony lamented, looking down at (y/n)'s still figure, and checked the sutured gash on her scalp.
He hadn't realized Agent Coulson and (y/n) had become that serious already, but he saw her happiness while he watched them leave his tower a few days ago. Just by the way her brighter eyes kept casting glances at Phil whenever she could.
She had also made it perfectly clear where they stood when she decked him earlier, which didn't surprise Tony in the least, with what he said to her, and if he could take it back, well he would, but it was too late for that.
Then Fury made it known to the team Coulson's last words, which made him feel worse.
Sadly, he hadn't expected to feel a tinge of jealousy, once she walked back into his life and out of his elevator with Agent Coulson's hand on her back, not when he was fully invested in Pepper, and had started to move forward with their relationship. They were living together, happy, but his ego still knew no bounds.
He also didn't expect that uncomfortable feeling to grow even stronger as he watched them leave and kiss on the way out of his tower. He cared so much about Pepper and was the happiest he'd been in a long time, but he never admitted to anyone, except JARVIS, just how much he missed the woman who layed unconcious under his hands.
Tony never told anyone how tore up he was when (y/n) left him standing there at SHIELD HQ. He also hid his doubts from Pepper when his mind would wander about a different future, which made him sick with guilt.
How could he know anything for sure, when (y/n) was right there with him, still, after all this time?
How could one woman still be with him, even though they had chosen different paths, and were living different lives?
They both seemed happy right where they were, but once he saw (y/n) smiling face, all those lingering thoughts and doubts hit his body like high velocity bullets.
Those doubts still kept him up at night, aching to see her, talk to her, but she kept her distance, needing the time to move on, they both did, and he thought he had, cause he admitted to himself he loved Pepper.
But..
(Y/n) was always there, permeating his nightmares, his dreams, and his mind, after all this time. It never left, making him wonder why?
Now, he just felt awful thinking about her like that, especially now, and for the things he had said to her and Agent Coulson in the hall before all hell broke loose.
His petty jealousy had him blurting out to Coulson just how sure he was that she still had feelings for him, a few hours before the agent died.
In the moment it was all fun and games, but with Coulson's reaction in the hall, and his death, it left him with a question he didn't want the answer too.
His guilt already sat heavily in his chest, but regardless of what had happened between them, he was going to be there for her, he had to be.
He swallowed thickly, refusing to look at those heated seconds in that death trap of a room. Her black eyes, feral looking face, and the rumbling, clattering of equipment, but for all intensive purposes..he began to wonder what the hell was happening to her, and what she meant by shadows.

"I've never seen what happened in that room, but since neither of you seem to know what's going on with your agent..I will say she seems strong, extremely capable," Steve added quickly, "it may take time for her to get back on her feet, but from what I've seen and read about her in her file, she'll pull through, but she's going to need time, and her friends. Losing someone you care about's never easy.."
