"This is it," Steve started, as the bay doors finally closed behind us, "Ultron knows we're coming, and odds are we'll be riding into heavy fire, but that's what we signed up for," he paused and looked at the twins, "the people of Sokovia, didn't. So our priority is getting them out before all hell breaks loose."
"What about Natasha?" I asked.
"I have a lock on where she is, I'll go in and get her," Bruce replied before anyone else could, "besides I don't trust the other guy around civilians right now."
I looked over at Clint and met his concerned gaze. He nodded his acquiesce, as I did, but we needed the Hulk on the playing field once Ultron's legion began to attack.
"Be that as it may, we're going to need both of you out there with us. We fight together," I countered, but he didn't answer, and none of us forced him on the matter. I hoped Nat would give him the necessary push he needed to get back out on the field, when he finally got to her.
"Any word on Fury?" I threw out after the uncomfortable silence.
"No," Tony answered.
"Okay, well then we should send the twins in first once we get to Sokovia, let them see a familiar face before we go in and ask them to vacate their homes," I continued, as I absently rubbed my shoulder.
"Agreed, these people wanted to live in peace, in the shelter of their homes, well that's not going to happen today, so we need to get them out of the city as soon as possible," Steve ordered, "we get the job done, and find out what Ultron's been building, and take it all out."
"Thor and I will handle that," Tony spoke up, "we looked over the schematics of the castle and Sokovia. Thor's agreed to start at the bottom and work his way up underneath the city, near where Romanoff's being held. There's a small surge of power fluctuating in the center."
"Good, then the rest of us, we keep the fight centered on us, if and when it comes," Steve reasoned, and took a deep breath, "Ultron says we're monsters, that we're what's wrong with the world, this isn't just about beating him, but to know whether he's right."
Tony looked up and met Steve's eyes, letting whatever they wanted to say to each other be known only by their eyes.
"Human beings fuck shit up all the time," I argued, "but we have the ability to right our wrongs. No one in this jet's a monster, or I, along with the rest of you, wouldn't be standing here, ready to put our lives on the line to save Sokovia and destroy a robot who's hellbent on killing everything we love," I declared, "we need to unfuck this situation, now, so let's go."
"See, maybe (y/n) needs to be the one giving the speeches, that fired me up," Clint scoffed.
"Yah, I agree," Tony remarked, and started the jet, "let's go."One minute from Sokovia
I paced the jet while Steve, Vision and Thor talked to the twins throughout our flight. Tony and Bruce talked about the path to Tasha, and the power being generated in the middle of the city. Everyone had their plans, and repeatedly when over them, while I walked around and tried to dispel the heaviness on my shoulders. The ache in my chest was easy to manipulate, and brush off, but the closer we came to Sokovia, the harder it was to concentrate on the job in front of me.
We had a walking, talking AI, the twins, all powered by the stone in the middle of Vision's head. Thor said there were more stones, and made it seem like there was more happening, but we had to destroy Ultron, and hopefully keep the people of Sokovia safe.
I closed my eyes and settled in the farthest corner of the jet, away from the chatter and nervous energy.
"Teotl nenemi ani (goddess walk with me)," I blurted out through a whisper, and rubbed my chest. The small prayer offered me some comfort, but the adrenaline was already running rampant through my veins, thankfully taking away some of the pain in my arm and shoulder, "now's the time..whatever's there..show me," I whispered too myself, already feeling the itch of hear gathering in my chest, but it'd been there since I came in contact with the actual stone in the middle or Vision's forehead.
My body was riddled with exhaustion, and pain from my shoulder, but the heat and adrenaline reinvigorated my unsteady frame, and mind, and that was enough for me. I prayed for more answers to show themselves once the fight started, not for me, but for my friends and family.
