"Fury!?" I shrieked, as I stumbled into a cold, small, damp concrete room, shocked to see Director Fury laying on a small bed, smirking at all of us. He didn't look 100%, but he was alive, and my body swayed against Steve's stiff frame, using it to hold myself up, "jesus, today just keeps getting better and better...I don't understand what the fuck's happening right now.."
Maria had taken us to what looked like a small storage facility near one if the dam's on the outskirts of the Potomac River. She relayed we were still near Washington D.C., and only a few hours away from the Treskilion, which alluded to us going there next.
She didn't say anything more once we were unloaded from the truck, and moved inside, but seeing the Director, bypassed the rest of my questions I still had for her.
"Nick?" Nat babbled, and lurched forward towards his small bed.
"Natasha?" I warned, reaching for her before she injured herself more.
"Get your injury taken care of and I'll explain everything," Fury ordered, shifting off his bed, and putting both feet on the ground. He was already dressed in his normal black attire, but bandages, and sweat still dotted his face, and crinkled under his black t-shirt.
"I need to call Tony, and make sure he gets out of the tower," I demanded thickly, nudging Tasha forward, into Sam's steady arms, "and we need to figure out where to go from here, things..things have changed Fury, and..."
"What the hell's going on?!" Steve yelled, finally breaking under the weight of all of it.
"Steve," I cautioned, as Maria entered the room with another agent, and I postured myself in between them and Steve, still not trusting anyone, but the three people who fought next to me.
"No, I want to know now!" Steve argued, and paced around the small concrete room, "did you guys know?! I can't deal with all these lies and secrets, look what it's done!"
"I'm sorry Rogers, but no I didn't know about Barnes," Fury confessed, "even as director, there were still thousands if not millions of files I didn't have access too."
"And how am I supposed to believe that, what about you two?!" Steve challenged, fixating on Nat and I.
Anger pulsed through my veins, but I was exhausted, and teetering on just falling over, "Nat go get your wound bandaged, while Steve and I take a little walk," I hissed through clenched teeth, nodding at Sam to follow Natasha, "now Steve."
"You need to get your neck checked out," Hill ordered, "and I have the ear piece and phone Stark sent you, he's been calling for the last hour."
"Just get me some water, I'm fine," I barked, still keeping my eyes on Steve.
When he didn't move, I grabbed his hand and forced him out the doors we came through, not stopping till we were near the platform leading to the dam.
"I don't doubt how upset you are, but how can you still be questioning my loyalty, when I was just as surprised to see Barnes as you were? I've never given you a reason to distrust me, hell, I'm still here fighting right beside you, because you're my friend and I love you. Loyalty still means something to me, goddammit!" I cursed, pulling at his arm when he tried to walk away from me, "don't fucken walk away from me, not now, or we're not going to survive this goddamn war or anything else that comes our way unless you trust us, least of all me. We're going to fall apart, I'm not saying you have to trust Fury or SHIELD, no offense sir if your listening."
"None taken, soldier," Fury called out, forcing a small smile across my face.
"Steve, look at me," I urged, and grabbed his face, as tears leaked down my cheeks. There was so much anger, and sorrow shadowing his bright blue eyes, and my heart broke for him, "if you can't trust me..." I paused once my voice cracked with emotion, "what am I fighting for, you're one of my best friends, one of the few people I really have left, I know you, and you know me. I'll stand by you, till the end of the line.." I added, and forced his forehead down on mine, using the saying he and Barnes did for a purpose, "I know you're angry, hurt, scared.. I can't even imagine what you felt when you saw him, but we'll figure this out, I promise.."
I forced every little piece of faith I had left into that promise, which wasn't much, and I didn't firmly believe it myself, but we had to keep fighting, and finish this, not just for us, and the world, but for his long lost friend.
"I won't let you face this alone," I decreed, "I told you to trust my rage, to trust me, just like I trust you..if we have to do this alone..then let's go.."
