The last twelve hours felt like a never ending hell. Even after I buckled my seat belt on Tony's plane, and watched as I lifted into the air, my consternation remained.
There were barely any words spoken between Tony and I about the hearing, and I was partially glad he didn't bring it up on our drive home. I didn't want to rehash my worry about what was said, but the silence didn't alleviate my stress.
Maybe I had overstayed.
Maybe things were moving too fast.
Which reiterated that point because as soon as we arrived back at the tower, he left for another meeting, while I grabbed my carry on bag and headed downstairs to catch a cab, since Tony had my truck loaded up on the plane.
I knew a relationship with Tony wasn't going to be easy, but to go from shared happiness and comfort to silence, was taxing. I had half a mind to call Rhodey or Steve, ultimately deciding against it, as I hopped into the cab without looking back.
Tony knew I was leaving, yet there was no goodbye, or any semblance of him even caring whether I stayed or went.
I clutched my phone, urging myself to text or call him and ask him what the hell his problem was. Instead, as the plane put more miles between me and everything in New York, I turned on some music and closed my eyes.
I was finally going home, and I held onto the hope, I would find what I needed.
Maybe time would do us both good.

A Few Hours Later

"FRIDAY did (y/n) already leave?" Tony asked as he stepped into his empty lab. He already knew the answer, but he held out a small smidge of hope that she'd be in her room, or downstairs in the training room.
He had so much to say to her after the hearing, but refused to utter a word as he watched her fidget uncomfortably on the drive home. The hearing had taken its toll on her, just as it did him, but there was something else bothering her. He thought about what she said in the lab just hours before they left to Washington, and he figured it was just her fear and worry.
He couldn't understand why, though, she'd already taken her place in his tower, as if she'd never left.
He was surprised with how quickly she took on his request to help his foundation, and began her work, but also stricken with guilt when she brought up Pepper.
He had dove head first with (y/n) as soon as she stepped into his tower, losing himself in actually having her here, finally, and things seemed align. Her mere presence kept the large amount of guilt and pain, he felt constantly, from tearing him apart, and the last thing he expected to hear from her mouth was her insecurity about what was going on between them.
She may of been right about Pepper, but he was here with her, now, and told her so, more than once these last few months.
"Yes boss, she should be arriving at SMX in the next six hours," FRIDAY replied, "she seemed quite morose when she left, and she turned off her phone mid flight."
"Let me know when she lands," he mumbled, and moved towards the blueprints of his newest project, "and get me all the information you can find on her childhood home in Oceano."
"Already did sir, (y/n) actually began gathering that information before she left, apparently her grandmother, and grandfather had land holdings in a few places, Oceano, and Mexico, where she was born are listed," she answered.
