Two Days Later
"Dropzone in sight," Clint reiterated over the music in my ears, "six miles, we're gonna do a flyby first, eta, one minute."
I popped my neck, as Unleash the Archers screamed in my ear, and stood up from my seat in the stealth jet. My belt was loaded with my usually guns, ammo, and knives, along with a few tasers. My skin prickled, and my stomach was rolling, but I exhaled, and drew myself up next to Thor and Steve.
Banner looked like he was going to throw up, as he listened to some Bach, while Nat moved from the secondary screens, and patted his shoulder.
My muscles were bunched up, and I started pacing around the motorcycles, checking and rechecking everything."Don't hit me, but your fidgeting is driving me insane," Steve announced, after he pulled one of my ear buds out, and kneeled down next to me, "I'm asking as a friend, not the soldier whose calling the shots," he nudged my shoulder, and lightly grabbed my hand, "and I still don't understand the draw of having someone yelling in your ears for the last few hours?" He snickered, and pointed to my phone.
Anger slushed through my blood, but when I looked up at him, his eyes were full of worry and understanding. My anger quickly faded away, and I squeezed his hand in comfort.
"That's because you have no common sense, this pumps me up," I retorted, but finally shut off my playlist, and concentrated on his face, "it's my first mission back since..." I let my low voice taper off without finishing my sentence. I didn't need too, cause Cap was there too, "I actually feel okay, just a little nervous, but I promise, if I need to, I'll back off."
"Liar, but I believe you can do this, but if it's too much, none of us will..." He started.
"No," I interrupted, "I'm ready, I just need to jump back in," I stated strongly, "I'm sure I'll be alright once I get out there." I mumured and stood up. I believed that wholeheartedly, besides I was surrounded by people who wouldn't let me fall. The last couple of days before our mission, I spent them going over what Bruce had gathered on the two older teens. There wasn't much known about them, only that their home, in the small village near Sokovia, which was near our focus point, had been shelled. There was no info on who did it, but I was sure that was the driving factor as to why they let a man, like von Strucker, experiment on them, if he was at all. We had no idea how long they had been with Strucker, or if they were even exposed to the sceptor, but the feeling in my gut told me that these two would probably give us more trouble than the dozens of soldiers separating us from the sceptor.
Natasha was still on the shelf when it came to offering the teens clemency, but it would be offered nonetheless.
Tony and I remained jovial to each other after our night in the common room. I still kept him at arms length, but enjoyed the time we started sharing together.
I didn't expect anything to go back to normal between us, we didn't have a normal, but the air wasn't filled with resentment or anger. Instead it was filled with hope, and talk about what lay ahead for our mission.
I also spent some time with Bruce, which was probably more scary than the mission ahead, but he was right. It took him longer to calm down, with me, versus Nat, but the lullaby they had practiced seem to continue to work. It was strange to see deep green eyes, and feel a large sweaty hand on mine, but the connection was there. I knew why it worked for him and Nat, considering they had gotten fairly close after the fall of SHIELD, but I still didn't understand why I also had the power to do what she could. Even Tony and Steve couldn't hide thier shock, although the look they shared between them wasn't one I'd seen before, but I let it go and focused on the job at hand.
I was also surprised none of them balked when I asked for a second motorcycle so I could ride next to Steve. It'd been a long time since I rode a bike, but I sure as hell wasn't going to sit on the back of Steve's as we rode into battle. Plus, Thor could fly, Tony was already in the air, and Nat and Clint would be stealing a jeep. I wasn't going to be the only one left on foot.
It was also decided Natahsa would stay as close as she could to Bruce once he hulked out. Just in case she was needed, but once we got out into the field, we all had our own jobs to do. Tony was to help us break through, then fly to the castle and find the sceptor, while Steve and I joined him after we cleared the field. Tony's new security robots would hopefully clear the small town laying adjacent to the castle if need be, but with the videos I'd already showed the team, the tension between the U.S. and the reigning regime, it was unlikely we would be met with happiness or excitement.
I had gone over our battle plans over and over again, looking for weak spots, trying to feel something, anything that may help my team survive the oncoming battle. Our mission was to get the sceptor, while also saving the local population from any repercussions of our onslaught.
I spent hours in front of one of Tony's screens, but I didn't feel anything other than duty. There was nothing but butterflies and nervousness sitting in my belly as I got dressed and loaded up.
The new suit Tony made for me, fit perfectly, and while the material felt heavy in my hand, it wasn't. The white Kevlar and leather sat over my skin like a cloud. It was warm, well insulated, and the hood was lined with fur. It was actually quite beautiful when I really looked at it.
