Next Morning
"Not that this plan doesn't sound wonderful, but the quinjet can carry, maybe one or two motorcycles at the most, and you're setting us down almost four miles away from the battle zone," I mentioned, eyeing Steve and Tony as they stood near the four screens mapping out the heavily guarded castle, and fortified forest below, "while some of you may not freeze, the rest of us humans just might. On top of that, the new scans seem to show Phase II weaponry, and while I know Red has a hold of Hulk with her lullaby, I think it's ill-advised not to have a back up plan, or someone else trained to do what Nat can."
"We do have a backup plan, she's called Veronica, just in case," Tony shrugged, turning and bringing up schematics of a new suit, almost five times bigger than his Mach 26, "there's nothing we can do about their updated weaponry, except not get hit by it. Thor and I will take out as many big guns as we can, and your suit is reinforced Kevlar. I also added a few things to it, you'll be fine in the cold."
I sighed and leaned back in my chair, a little miffed I had no idea Tony made such a suit. It made me wonder what else he had buried in his tower, or what else he and Steve had planned, but I was more worried about the mission at hand.
For the last hour Steve, Tony, and Thor went over their plan to break into the decrepit castle and get back the sceptor. We had just finished looking over the layout, but I kept one of Tony's small pad's in my hands and continued to look it over.
The forest and snow would help keep our arrival a secret, and provide us with some cover, but I was more concerned with the alien technology, and, for some reason, the two young people, who Bruce believed were being experimented on. We were barging into a heavily watched area, and while I too wanted to get the sceptor out of Von Strucker's hands, there were more than just soldiers to get through.
"(Y/n), the Hulk reacted to your presence in New York," Bruce commented, leaning forward as he spoke, "I think if need be, you also, may be able to calm the other guy down, just as well as Nat can."
"Bruce that was just a fluke, I barely remember...." I tried to say, but Bruce raised his hand and smiled.
"Nothing's a fluke with the other guy," he finished.
"See...? Now stop being a baby, besides there's an access road, here," Nat added, pointing to the small, almost invisible road, leading to various bunkers hidden in the trees, "Clint and I are gonna commandeer one of their jeeps, they run through ever hour or so, so we should have no problem with transportation, or freezing."
The rest of the Avengers, sitting around the large round table, nodded their heads. Bruce looked a little wary, which I couldn't blame him, the Hulk was dangerous, but undeniably needed for this mission. Thor looked impatient, and ready to leave. He believed Von Strucker had had Loki's sceptor for too long, doing god knows what with it. He wanted nothing more than too get it back, and take it to Asgard for safe keeping, like the Tesseract.
This was our first mission as a whole team, and with me back on the field. I knew Steve believed I wasn't ready, hell, it'd only been a little over a month since I got back on my feet, but I needed to do this. I had to believe I still belonged out there on the field, among family and friends.
The questions about what the hell was going on with me, be damned.
My muscles twitched thinking about the battle ahead, and gazing at the people I looked upon as the only family I had, well, besides Rhodey.
I let a long breath out of my mouth, and tilted my head at the plans in front of me, gauging and regauging the field.
I couldn't help the feeling we were missing something, even though the battlefield had been very well reconned by Tony and Steve, and I believed it was the lack of info on the twins.
"And the biologics?" I hummed, feeling all their eyes on my back. I still hadn't come to terms as to what Nat and Fury had accumulated in that stupid file they had begun collecting on me, and I couldn't help but feel like my teammates eyes were constantly on me, waiting for me to say something or feel something, I still had no clue about. I knew, my grandmother made sure I knew, but it was just too insane to think about, not when I had a mission to concentrate on.
"I..I don't like the idea of having two children standing in our way, and they will, god knows what Von Strucker filled their heads with," I blurted out, enlarging a picture of the young woman with rich brown hair.
"We still don't have Intel on them, but I want them taken alive," Steve cantered, centering his gaze on Nat and Clint.
"And if that's not an option?" Natasha replied, lifting an eyebrow, and crossing her arms over one of Steve's hoodies, "they enlisted to be a part of HYDRA...the soldiers on the field aren't going to be given that same clemency?"
"They're children Red, and you don't know that for sure. Their country's been at war for decades, and like I said, we have no idea why they allowed Von Strucker to take them, or what lies he's spouted to them. This was probably their only option. I remember being that age, without a road to go down, it's the reason I joined the marines," I sighed, brushing my fingers over the fuzzy picture of the two figures in question, "everyone should be given a second chance, you were given one, we all were." I had no idea why I felt so strongly about two kids I'd never even met, but the feeling was there, and I wanted to help them.
