After I stopped singing, the drive into Puente Antigua was quiet, only the sound of the jeep and the thrumming of my fingers could be heard, but the air was charged with unspoken words, and tension prickling my stomach.
I let out a grateful breath, once Coulson finally pulled up to an abandoned restaurant on the outskirts of the small one horse town. It reminded me of the town I grew up in, but covered in dust, and rickety old buildings. The people had watched our silent procession through some of their unpaved streets with interest and curiosity. I had no idea if they knew of the secret organization nestled near the mountains, or the other worldly weapon laying just a handful of minutes away.
"These people, this place reminds me of the town I grew up in," I blurted out, and cleared my throat, "they seem a little...unsettled by our presence.."
"They are, I've sent a few agents in, to eat or shop at some of the second hand stores, gather information, but they're wary of strangers," he replied nonchalantly, and finally stopped our truck, near an old offroad vehicle, "but they've been welcoming, curious, but haven't caused any need for concern."
"Okay, but do we really have to do this?" I asked, gazing at the other three agents, who had jumped out and began taking everything out of the large vehicle and the abandoned restaurant, with haste."Yes, this is a matter of national security," Coulson stated patiently.
"Is it? I read the file we accumulated, and these two are so straight laced, I bet they're square as hell, but like I said before, have you given any thought to what may happen if another agency, or "the bad guys", approach them? We could be losing a great resource, and putting them in danger," I retorted quickly, going with my gut instinct about this particular situation, "we should consult them, I'm sure you have waivers or something similar to NDA agreements or something...?""What part of secret is hard for you to understand?" Coulson scoffed, jumping out and heading into the restaurant, before I could answer him.
I sat in the jeep for another minute and watched SHIELD work fast and load up the doctor's equipment and work. I understood secrecy, but my gut instinct told me, in this case, it would work against us not for us. According to SHIELD files, we had evil popping up all over the world, and not just terrorism, but new anomalies. I was positive we weren't the only agency monitoring what was happening in the New Mexican desert. We were just the first ones to arrive, and that just made me uncomfortable.
I snorted when the two, very noticeable scientists ran up and began yelling at Coulson, and our agents.
Dr. Foster was very petite in stature, with brown hair, yet she had no problem getting in Coulson's face. Dr. Selvig, on the other hand, tried to hold her back, and for a man who was twice her size, he was having a hard time doing it.
I slipped out of the jeep and made my way towards the three of them knowing I was probably going to get into trouble, but we were going about this all wrong. I tried to dust off the dirt, and sweat clinging to my clothes, and face, but I gave up as I approached the angry woman."Dr. Foster, Dr. Selvig, it's a pleasure to finally meet both of you, I'm agent (l/n) of SHIELD," I announced, and extended my hand towards the feisty brunette.
"You can't do this, it's unconstitutional," Dr. Foster yelled, taking a threatening step towards me. Dr. Selvig grabbed her around the waist and held her back, but she still fought to move towards her truck.
"Ma'am we're assessing a security threat," Coulson stated, coming up next to me, and gave her a small smile.
"This is my life's work, how is that a security threat? YOU can't come here and take my stuff!" She fumed, pushing away from Selvig."Dr. Foster, I assure you that when we're done, we'll give your stuff back to you, it's just we have no idea the consequences, if any, about what these anomalies are. Hence the national security aspect. Please bare with us as we try to figure out what this means for humanity, before sharing it with the world," I announced, feeling Coulson's eyes on me, while the other three agents jumped back into their jeep and left, "I promise, just give us some time."
Dr Jane Foster's head tilted curiously while I extended a SHIELD business card to her, but it was Selvig who took it and nodded at me.
