Chapter 55 I Know You

Tony yelled out her name as he witnessed her body fall 150 ft from the carrier, into the dark waters below.
Fury contacted him, via the earpiece he had given her, but he was already on his way, pushing his MARK 26, harder than he'd tested it.
The imminent fear almost drove him mad with panic after she hung up on him, her unsolicited cries and the truth of her words making everything worse, but finally pushed him to finally make a decision he should of made a long time ago.
He couldn't deny what layed in his heart anymore, and once (y/n) told him she loved him, he whispered out loud to himself that he loved her too, all this time, knowing Pep was standing somewhere behind him.
Nothing could stop him from going, not even Pepper's plea or the reminder of the promises they made to each other, but there was no conviction in them, as if she already knew this day was coming. She urged him to call Rhodes, or to alert the authorities, but there was no one else, and he couldn't sit by and do nothing, not when he feared he would lose (y/n), to the real dangers of what was happening.
He briefly read over the files as soon as she sent them, and was taken aback by the intricate plans HYDRA utilized in order to get this project off the ground. The technology alone being used to target certain people was surprising, and the accumulated list already had a few million names on it.
Something like this should of taken a few years to develop, and he wondered how and why he didn't find the plans, after he placed a small infiltration device on Fury's control station, before Loki nearly killed them all.
He realized rather quickly that (y/n) was right, about everything, and her along with the rest of the team were facing this alone.
Who knew how deep this conspiracy went, who was involved, but it wasn't hard to see how far it was going to go?

The time for sitting by had passed.
The time for hiding what he felt for (y/n), had passed, and he left Pepper standing in his lab, while she called his name.

Only he arrived too late.
His breath rushed out of his chest as JARVIS quickle scanned the downed carriers, already seeing agents scurrying around to help, but the last ship began to break apart, and explode, sending debris in every direction, while it fell towards the river.
He'd lost hope she was still alive, but JARVIS's scan found her body, along with Cap's, just as he rushed into the chaos.

He had just reached the middle of the foray when her body fell, and crashed into the water, closely followed by the Captain's, but he dove after her, following her into the ice cold water.
The sight of her busted and broken, forced a small cry from his throat. Her face already turning black, and blood leaked out of her mouth and nose. He almost gagged once he noted her collar bone partially sticking through her skin.

For a split second he began to believe that this.. this was going to be the norm for him.
Losing people he cared about most, to this job, and the evil which continued to plague the world. That same evil seemed to be getting worse for all of them. A new threat seemed to pop up just as things started to settle. He had Vanko, and AIM make an appearance, just as Thor and SHIELD had their own.
If what (y/n) said was true about his parents, then he lost them because of his father's work with SHIELD, but he refused to believe it.
He almost lost Pepper and (y/n) to AIM and Killian, and he would have if it wasn't for the serum running through Pepper blood, but (y/n) she seemed to want to let go, and he understood that too.
So much loss and near misses, but seeing (y/n) so broken underneath twenty feet of water almost knocked him unconscious.
How much longer could they fight, could he fight, especially something unseen like HYDRA. He couldn't lose her, not now, not to this. She deserved so much more than death, and she shouldn't have to fight forever.
