We found a space on the field away from everyone else and started throwing the frisbee to each other. Frisbees are so weird, like, it's kind of difficult but not, and it kind of hurts but also doesn't.
"What do you think made you ill then?" Ryan asked as he threw the frisbee at me.
"Dunno" I replied as I caught it. "I must have just gotten it from like the air or something because I never went and saw anyone else beforehand"
"It's weird how nobody else got ill though" he said as I threw it at him. "Like, if it was a bug it must have been contagious"
"Well that's what happens when you have a serious lack of social activity. Plus everyone from the dumping ground is selfish and would only care about staying away from me so they don't get ill themselves"
"I'm not though right?"
"No you're not. I just mean the others"
"Right. Are you looking forward to going back to school?"
"Are you serious? I'd rather never have to go back to that place again. Nobody looks forward to school"
"Well some people do"
I kept hold of the frisbee he has just thrown to me which somehow I managed to catch. "Ryan, are you looking forward to it?"
"Well, kind of"
"How?" I asked as I began the game again.
"Well, it's been ages since we've seen everyone..."
"Yeah everyone we hate because they hate care kids simply for being in this situation that they can't control anyway. Like, who do we even talk to at school who isn't from the dumping ground?"
"Fair enough. It would be nice to go back to having a routine though. Like, it gets boring just doing nothing all day and not having any reason to get up in the morning"
"I mean I get what you're saying, but I can't agree with you on this one Reeves"
"Oh we're using surnames now are we?" He smirked. I've missed that smirk. I've missed it at lot.
"It's weird though" I continued. "Our exams are this year. Isn't that scary?"
"Well, yeah it's scary but everyone goes through it..."
"Oh come on don't try to make out like you aren't freaking out inside about the fact that these exams pretty much mean everything and if we fail we will have to keep repeating this year until we finally get it right?"
"Well, it doesn't freak me out in that sense. And we aren't going to fail, it's actually quite hard to fully fail something, you have to literally only write three sentences on the paper. But these exams don't mean everything. All they do is allow us to get into sixth form so we can take more meaningless exams to get us into universities that might not even accept us or lead us down any suitable career path. Or, they get us into college where we have to come up with a career path at the age of sixteen and hope it takes us somewhere....you know what you're right this is actually really scary why did you make me think about it?!"
"Sorry but it's on my mind. Our entire school lives up to this point have been building up to these exams. And Ryan, what if I fail?"
"You won't fail"
"That's easy for you to say Mr In Top Set For Everything"
"No I mean it. You have nothing to worry about, you're smarter than you think"
"What about maths?"
His face stiffened a bit but he played it off by throwing the frisbee back to me. "You'll be fine. I'll help you revise and you'll be prepared for the exam. I'm sure you won't fail. Besides you have loads of GCSEs, one fail won't stop you from getting into college or whatever it is you want to do"
